Help your team succeed with these 4 leadership tips
When we get wrapped up in the quicksand of daily tasks, deadlines and meetings, we often forget to value the most essential aspect of our company: the staff. Attention to your staff's needs and concerns should be paramount, considering a healthy portion of your success depends on their drive to perform.
By displaying these four fundamental traits, you will both strengthen your leadership and boost your team's success as a whole.
1. Be respectful The golden rule sounds so simple, but it is crucial when dealing with interpersonal relationships. It is understood that deadlines and stress are abundant, but your minimal time available should be valuable and positive rather than demanding and negative.
Keep water-cooler talk to a minimum, as it always finds its way into the ears of those listening for it. Speak when spoken to, listen when others need to be heard, pass on encouragement when people are at a low, and celebrate when objectives are met.
2. Trust your staff Smothering and micromanaging a team can create a paranoid group of unhappy campers searching for a new career.
Resist being the monkey on their back. Trust your staff to learn from mistakes while trucking toward the goals you set for them. The nagging fear of losing your gains will cause you to immediately instigate the process of loss. Fail forward and be confident that your team will reflect your values and integrity.
3. Give direction Are you seeking focused, driven associates relentlessly diving headlong into their work? If so, you need to give your team the "why."
The "why" is the fulfillment your team will work for in order to ensure success. Determine your business goals, align those goals with your customer benefits, and pass on the customer benefits to your team. If your goals are to acquire new customers in order to gain market share, resulting in a revenue boost, then you must focus on the "why."
Passing on to your team that you simply have a new revenue goal higher than the last will not be enough to motivate them. If you let your staff know that the customer acquisition campaign has been targeted toward instructors sharing your products with clients, you soon have an encouraged and engaged team ready to execute on your behalf.
4. Have a plan Direction is crucial, but giving a general direction doesn't reach a destination - strategic direction does. When this step is skipped, your team will face pointless meetings to debate minute details rather execute meaningful tasks.
With the "why" in place, your team is ready to drive. But leaders are responsible for providing a map with the highways of "who" and "what" clearly defined. Provide the direction to drive your team and pave the highways for them to get there competently.
Lastly, get out of your office and work in the trenches once a week. Your willingness to step out of your comfort zone is how you earn your spot at the table with your team just as they do for you.
