Skin Deep
As naturopathic physicians we are always looking for ways to help our patients get and stay healthy. In a recent flurry of spring cleaning, I found a number of personal care and cleaning products in the back of my cabinets I realized are not good for health. I wonder if you might find similar things in your home?

Some have chemicals that are hormone disruptors, some have toxic ingredients; some are just plain unnecessary.  There is a terrific website overseen by the Environmental Working Group and an accompanying Skin Deep App where you scan in a bar code or type in a product name and get a rating related to known and suspected hazards.

We do not want people to become paranoid about everything in their homes, but we may as well take charge of what we're exposed to by choice!

Check out the Skin Deep website, and download the app and as you work to replace items in your home, reach for those that are more kind to your body.

And along with spring cleaning, we hope this season will have you plotting some summertime adventures near or far. Getting away, seeing something new, eating some different foods, experiencing something novel, all rejuvenate the body, stimulate the mind & nourish the soul.

Homeopathy & natural medicine help one girl step up to the plate
by Amy Rothenberg ND

An adorable and bright 11-year-old girl, Laila, was brought to see me for the treatment of severe gastritis. About a year before our first visit, she had sustained an injury to her shoulder, though neither she nor her parents remembered exactly how. She had come home from school complaining of pain and, several days later, was taken to the pediatrician who recommended keeping an eye on it.

After almost a month of pain and discomfort, as well as x-ray diagnostic work and visits to a chiropractor and an osteopathic physician, no gross physical abnormalities had been detected. Chiropractic adjustments, osteopathic manipulation, massage, and other forms of bodywork were tried to no avail.

In due time, Laila was prescribed a regimen of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, which she took faithfully and which took the edge off the pain, but did not totally relieve it. After several months on these medications, Laila began to complain of stomachaches. She was diagnosed with gastro-esophageal reflux. Her family physician recommended that she discontinue the anti-inflammatory medicines and take some different drugs for the acid reflux.

Recipe: Orange Cranberry Biscotti - Gluten Free!

As patients become more informed about food allergies and symptoms attributed to a "leaky gut," many take up a gluten free diet. Such an approach to food is much easier now than years ago as there are a myriad of  products and raw ingredients available for most every palate.
Biscotti
A colleague and friend, Sheila Frodermann ND first sent me this gluten free biscotti recipe, which I keep on adapting to my own tastes and preferences after making it numerous times over the past few months. I have shared this recipe with friends and patients and to a person, everyone RAVES! Try it out, see what you think!

Featured recommendation: Syrian American Medical Society
In this space we like to share information about a product, service or organization whose work we admire. Though we are involved with issues related to natural health & healing, we also know that the suffering of others has an impact on all of us.  And the goal of good medicine is to help all people.

We have all been saddened and felt powerless with the ongoing news of the desperate situation in Syria. The stories and images in the media of refugee families are often heartbreaking. In these difficult times for so many people fleeing war, poverty and oppression, many of us are looking for ways to help.

We would like to encourage you to donate to the Syrian American Medical Society, which is working to provide essential medical care in a country where the need is high a
nd the infrastructure is beyond fractured.
