Beginning in May, PLC helped the founders and staff of the Heroes' Wings Foundation prepare for their mission to "provide transportation services to our heroes who touch our hearts every day." PLC prepared the group's application for California tax-exempt status, amended their bylaws, provided ongoing general counsel advice and support, and facilitated pro bono assistance to develop employee and volunteer handbooks.

Young Attorney Steps Up to Help Non-profit in Pro Bono Case
Sam Lam works with PLC's Community Organization Legal Assistance Project
The Public Law Center (PLC) is known as Orange County's Pro Bono Law Firm. For attorney Sam Lam, PLC's reputation as the "go to" place for pro bono became apparent even as a first-year law student at University of California, Irvine School of Law. Fast forward a few years and Sam, now an associate with Jones Day, was encouraged to volunteer with PLC.

Starting a New Nonprofit or Know Someone Who Is?
For certain small nonprofits, the IRS application may have become EZ'er, but the initial corporate necessities remain the same. Here are just some of the things they will need to do before applying:
- Determine the name of the Organization
- Draft and file Articles of Incorporation with the California Secretary of State
- Appoint the initial Board of Directors
- Draft the Organization's Bylaws and Conflict of Interest Policy
- Hold the 1st Meeting of the Board of Directors
- Apply for Employer Identification Number (EIN)
