AwesomeSA Grant Winners

By Claudia Loya, AwesomeSA Dean

AwesomeSA would like to congratulate Alfred Rocha for his "Travis Park Lit Up!" project, which plans to transform Travis Park into a wonder of light for a few days. The ultimate goal of this project is to welcome a new and exciting environment in our San Antonio parks, including pop-up happy hours, traveling art exhibits and performances.

Our second, surprise winner is Eddie Romero and JJ Lopez's "Travis Park Dance Party", which will bring the "Super Soul Shakedown" event series to Travis Park. These events have deep roots in San Antonio and pay homage to the history of soul music in our city and has been active through Trinity University's KRTU.

Big Tex

By Aurora Perkins, Center City Development & Operations Department

In line with the vision of SA2020 and the Decade of Downtown, the Blue Star II/Big Tex project by the NRP Group is currently underway in Southtown and Council District 5.  Blue Star II represents a housing and retail development with a total investment of $42 million of which the city provided $4.9 million in tax and development incentives.  The project will consist of 320 market rate housing units, approximately 6,000 square feet of commercial retail space, an art gallery and over $2.2 million in public improvements. The designed development includes the revitalization of the former Big Tex Grain site and provides a direct connection to the River and surrounding amenities, further strengthening SouthTown as a destination for living and social activities.  An official ground breaking ceremony with the Mayor, Councilwoman Gonzales, and County officials is scheduled for May 30th at 10:00 am.
