X MARKS THE ART:
"Artist Showcase"

In honor of Contemporary Art Month (CAM), Public Art San Antonio is hosting an X MARKS THE ART: Artist Showcase on Tuesday, March 25th from 6 - 7:30pm at 400 N. St. Mary's, Suite 101.
The series highlights San Antonio based artists and collectives who are activating vacant spaces downtown with a series of light and technology based art projects. Installations explore innovative uses of interactive systems, social media, lighting, and sound in the context of the busy downtown pedestrian experience.
Light refreshments from Restaurant Gwendolyn will be served.
This is a FREE event. Free parking is available after 5pm at select city owned garages and metered spaces as part of the City's Downtown Tuesday program. For more information, please call (210) 207-1435.

Síclovía

Save the date for Sunday, March 30 from 11am-4pm for the 2014 Síclovía presented by the YMCA of Greater San Antonito in partnership with the City of San Antonio and sponsored by H-E-B. Síclovía is a free event that turns major city streets in to a safe place for people to exercise and play. The streets become temporarily car-free for about 6 hours on Sundays for families to run, ride bikes, take exercise classes and enjoy their city streets. Spring is in the air and the weather has never been better. In this month's issue, you will read about several spring events you can only find downtown. These events are designed to draw both locals and visitors to the center of our city, where everyone can enjoy downtown's vibrant atmosphere.
The much-anticipated grand reopening of Travis Park is right around the corner. This special event will be filled with festivities including: live music, games, yoga and historical tours throughout the day. The reopening will conclude with Twilight on the Plaza, a special fundraising dinner to benefit Travis Park. Be sure to read about all the excitement in this month's issue.
If health and wellness top your list, be sure to participate in Síclovía on Sunday, March 30th or take a stroll and visit some of the great public art pieces that are scattered throughout downtown. March is Contemporary Art Month(CAM), when San Antonio artists present the best our community has to offer at galleries, stores, events and schools. In honor of CAM, we are highlighting the X MARKS THE ART event on March 25th which will feature artists who are activating vacant spaces downtown. Looking ahead, we are excited about the 2nd Annual Maverick Music Festival taking place March 21st & 22nd at La Villita Historic Arts Village in downtown San Antonio.

Peanut Factory Lofts

Catalytic to the redevelopment of the near Westside, The Peanut Factory Lofts is a $10 million adaptive reuse student housing development that includes 98 housing units. The project is located at 1025 S. Frio Street in City Council District 5. The Center City Housing Incentive Policy and a Brownfields Remediation grant provided over $1.4 million in incentives to the project. The project is currently under construction and will be completed by September 2014.

Maverick Music Festival

The second annual Maverick Music Festival will take place March 21 & 22 at La Villita Historic Arts Village in downtown San Antonio. The new lineup additions showcase the festival's variety with Georgia-based singer songwriter Washed Out; multi-platinum rock band Candlebox; hip-hop duo Run the Jewels; and San Antonio two-piece Lonely horse.
The 2014 fest offers a uniquely well-rounded music experience that expanded with the addition of a second day this year. The festival also brings in a lineup of innovative food vendors that reflect the growing culinary landscape of the city.

Travis Park Grand Reopening Monday, March 31st

The City of San Antonio invites the community to celebrate the Grand Reopening of historic Travis Park on Monday, March 31st with family-friendly activities including: fitness classes, historic tours, games and more.
The Grand Reopening begins at 6:30 in the morning and the event lasts until 8 pm. There will be free and fun festivities including: Zumba, yoga courtesy of YMCA of Greater San Antonio, historical tours, a dog event with Lucy's Doggy Daycare and Spa, coffee break, musical entertainment, games, food trucks and more. The public is also invited to attend a very special press conference at 9:30 am to celebrate the reopening and unveil the programming calendar for the year.
To cap off the full day of celebrations, the ticketed Twilight on the Plaza dinner event will take place under the stars from 6-8 pm. Chef Mata from The St. Anthony Hotel will bring his culinary talents to prepare a farm-to-table, four-course meal paired with Becker Vineyards wine. The South Texas Trio will serve up live jazz entertainment for all to enjoy. Dinner tickets are $75 each: To purchase, please visit www.saparksfoundation.org. The revitalization of Travis Park was sparked by a grant from Southwest Airlines to the City of San Antonio to support the city's placemaking efforts. In addition to the, placemaking grant, the City has also undertaken a number of maintenance and improvement projects, which are being coordinated to enhance the park experience at Travis Park, one of the oldest municipal parks in the country.

The San Antonio Book Festival

The grounds of the Southwest School of Art and the Central Library will be converted into a creative and learning experience on Saturday, April 5 from 10am-5pm for the 2nd Annual San Antonio Book Festival.
We are pleased to welcome more than 90 acclaimed national and regional authors. In addition to author presentations, participants will enjoy book sales and signings, a literary marketplace, recipe demonstrations from cookbook authors at the H-E-B Central Market cooking tent, food truck fare, live music, and a technology area with the Geek Bus and a Connect Tent with instruction in online learning will also be hosted at these two campuses.
New this year to the San Antonio Book Festival is the debut of San Antonio's Literary Death Match, a show described by the Los Angeles Times as the "most entertaining reading series ever." The event will take place April 5 at The Charline McCombs Empire Theatre at 6:30 p.m. with a special cocktail reception with Festival authors from 5:30-6:30 p.m. This is a ticketed event; to purchase please visit the Foundation website.
