SPOTLIGHT FEATURE
Re-examining Popular Culture Through Social Justice

By Ernesto Reyes

Hey Y'all, my name is Ernesto Reyes and I am a Cross-Cultural Center intern.  This upcoming week I have my Student Initiated Project and it is based around re-examining and re-imagining what popular culture has influenced and made evident or subtly in terms of oppression.  For a long time I have been interested in making connections and looking at how some of the most influential things in my life have been sources of both critique and empowerment.  I have taken a look at how some of the major sources and foundations of pop culture embody and explore various forms of social justice and oppressions either intentionally or indirectly. - Read More

"Latinos Beyond Reel: Challenging a Media Stereotype" Film Screening

Tuesday | April 23th | 11AM

Cross-Cultural Center Comunidad

The film uncovers a pattern of gross misrepresentation and under-representation, in which Latinos tend to appear, if at all, as gangsters, prostitutes, drug dealers, and welfare-leeching illegals. The film challenges viewers to think critically about the wide-ranging effects of these media stereotypes and to envision alternative representations and models of production more capable of capturing the humanity and diversity of real Latinos. Documentary by Miguel Picker and Chyng Sun. A discussion will follow.
