By Jennifer Maldonado
I was first introduced to Son Jarocho my senior year of high school. Hector Flores, Woodrow Wilson High School's United Students organizer at the time, invited me to Son Jarocho workshops at the Eastside Café in El Sereno (http://eastsidecafe.org/). I had no idea what to expect but I knew the location was walking distance from home and I knew I wanted to commit to donation-based music lessons. On a beautiful Saturday morning, I walked to the Eastside Café and met community members and my first facilitator- Manuel Mapache Ruiz. When Mapache began to explain the different sizes of the jarana and share basic strums- I was captivated. Then and there, I knew I wanted these sounds, this music, to be in my life. - Read More
