Fair & Lovely: Skin Censorship and
Whitening Creams
Thursday | February 17 | 5-7pm
Cross-Cultural Center Comunidad
Have you ever wondered why we're sold whitening creams? What was up with that controversy with Aishwariya Rai being too whitened for ELLE magazine? Have you noticed how so many Asian pop stars or Bollywood stars are so fair? Have a dialogue about whitening creams, shadeism, and the censoring of brown skin. What power structures create this shadeism phenomenon, and can we deconstruct them? We're going to have a student-made documentary ("Shadeism"), food, friends, community, and also try to have a deep dialogue about the meaning behind these so-called 'beauty' products.

Capoeira Therapy Session
Monday | February 28 | 7-8:15pm
Price Center Dance Room
Burned out? Exhausted by school, work, activism, or society at large? Join us for an evening of fitness, music, self-expression, and self-care via capoeira, a Brazilian martial art (No experience required). What is Capoeira? Capoeira is a martial art that was created by African slaves who were brought to Brazil by Portuguese colonists. Because they were not allowed to fight, the slaves made their martial art look like a dance, creating capoeira's distinct dance-like form. In this program we will learn basic movements, learn music, and play capoeira! Snacks and water provided! Please wear comfortable work-out clothes, but jeans work too. For more information and to RSVP, contact UCSD Capoeira at capoeirasungods@gmail.com. |
