UPCOMING HIGHLIGHTS

Thai Pongalthaipongal

Thursday | January 13 | 12-2pm
Cross-Cultural Center Art Space

Thai Pongal is a harvest festival celebrated in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and in Sri Lanka. Thai is the month that begins the Tamil New Year, and pongal means "boiling over or spill over". Thus, the new year is celebrated with a sweet dish, called pongal, in which the boiling over of milk in the clay pot symbolizes abundance for the household.

Thai Pongal, celebrated at harvest time, is traditionally intended to thank the Sun God and farmstead livestock that helped create the abundance.

Come join us to celebrate the New Year and build community! We will have pongal (rice pudding), kolam (colored powder art), food, and mendhi (henna). For more information, contact [email protected].
Co-sponsored by the
Coalition for South Asian People Student Organization (CSAP).

The book contains over 200 images of Pilipina/o Americans in San Diego, from the early Pilipina/o American pioneers who worked as farmworkers and Navy stewards to the Pilipina/o American individuals and organizations of today.

Authors Dr. Judy Patacsil, Dr. Rudy Guevarra Jr., and Professor Felix Tuyay are members of the Filipino/a American National Historical Society (FANHS) San Diego Chapter, whose mission is to "promote understanding, education, enlightenment, appreciation, and dissemination of the history and culture of Filipino Americans in the United States." Kiamsha Community Conferencejustice

Saturday | January 22 | 9-4pm
Cross-Cultural Center

The Kiamsha Community Conference will be an event focused on educating, uplifting, and connecting the people of color community on campus. Kiamsha in Swahili means "that which awakens me". Through this conference, student orgs will foster a greater sense of allyship through the opportunity to host and engage in different workshops focusing on issues affecting community groups. This will enhance and broaden an awareness of issues outside our particular groups and develop strategies in order to support other groups fighting for change in the name of social justice.

The community conference also follows this year's Affiliates program theme: Stronger Self, Stronger Community. We will be focusing on creating sustainable methods of activism in order to decrease student burn-out. Our goal is to aim for effectiveness and efficiency in our social justice work without sacrificing academic, personal, and professional responsibilities and growth. This conference will serve as a space to be in community, understand one another, and build sustainable models of growth and reach. This conference will challenge those very familiar with the work to step back while facilitating the ability for others to step-up.

Contact [email protected] to for a workshop proposal so that you can present at the conference.
