~ THANK YOU FOR ATTENDING ~

ACCESSIBLE RESIDENTIAL DESIGN TRAINING

April 25 & 26, 2013 - Ala Moana Hotel

Residential Training audienc

The Disability and Communication Access Board would like to thank all the attendees who came to this year's 2-day training.  There were 160 attendees this year and we would like to thank them for taking the time from their busy schedules to attend.

DCAB would also like to thank the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Pacific ADA Center and Fair Housing First for helping to sponsor this year's training, allowing DCAB to host this event without a fee.

To our two presenters, Ms. Marsha Mazz of the U.S. Access Board and Mr. Jack Catlin of LCM Architects, LLC, we would like to thank  them for all their hard work in preparing their presentations and handouts.  We know a lot of time and effort is spent in preparing their presentations and we appreciate their efforts.

DCAB was also fortunate that Mr. Bill Hecker, AIA and Mr. Mark Mazz, AIA were able to participate in our panel discussion with Ms. Mazz and Mr. Catlin.  A special "thank you" to both of them!!  Their expertise in the area of accessibility was very valuable and informative.  This year's attendees were very fortunate to have four experts on one panel, a very rare event, to share their experiences and knowledge relevant to residential facilities.

DCAB looks forward to our next training to be held on September 18, 2013

featuring "Accessible Communication Feature."

Stay tuned for more information and the registration

announcement coming out soon!!

New Guidance on "Design and Construction"

Requirements Under the Fair Housing Act

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) released new guidance about "Accessibility (Design and Construction) Requirements for Covered Multifamily Dwellings Under the Fair Housing Act."

The new guidance is designed to help design professionals, and developers and builders better understand their obligations and help persons with disabilities better understand their rights regarding the design and construction requirements of the federal Fair Housing Act.

This document reinforces and expands on the Fair Housing Act provisions presented at the Accessible Residential Design Training, which was co-sponsored by DCAB, Pacific ADA Center, HUD, and Fair Housing First.

U.S. Access Board Issues Proposed Requirements for Accessible Shared Use Paths

Shared Use Path

The U.S. Access Board has released for public comment proposed requirements for accessible shared use paths used by pedestrians, bicyclists, and others for transportation or  recreation.  These requirements would supplement guidelines the U.S. Access Board is developing for public rights-of-way.  The U.S. Access Board's proposal add new provisions tailored to shared use paths that address grade, cross slope, surfaces, and protruding objects.

The deadline for comments is May 14, 2013.

DCAB reviewed the proposed requirements and plans to submit comments.  For more information about DCAB's comments, please contact Curtis Motoyama, Facility Access Coordinator, at (808) 56-8121 or email at curtis.motoyama@doh.hawaii.gov.
