U.S. Access Board Issues Proposed Requirements for Accessible Shared Use Paths

Shared Use Path

The U.S. Access Board has released for public comment proposed requirements for accessible shared use paths used by pedestrians, bicyclists, and others for transportation or recreation.  These requirements would supplement guidelines the U.S. Access Board is developing for public rights-of-way.  The proposed rights-of-way guidelines, which cover access to sidewalks, streets, and other pedestrian facilities, provide requirements for pedestrian access routes, including specifications for route width, grade, cross slope, surfaces, and other features.  The U.S. Access Board's proposal would apply these and other relevant requirements to shared use paths as well.  It also would add new provisions tailored to shared use paths that address grade, cross slope, surfaces, and protruding objects.

The deadline for comments is May 14, 2013.

DCAB is in the process of reviewing the proposed requirements and plans to submit comments.  For more information about DCAB's comments, please contact Curtis Motoyama, Facility Access Coordinator, at (808) 586-8121 or email at curtis.motoyama@doh.hawaii.gov.

DCAB Plan Review Fee

architectural plans

DCAB started charging a plan review fee on January 1, 2013.

The plan review fee only applies to projects covered under Section 103-50, Hawaii Revised Statutes (HRS §103-50).  All state and county projects are covered under HRS §103-50.  Most federal and private projects are not covered under HRS §103-50.

The HRS §103-50 Document Transmittal Form has been updated to include the plan review fee and instruction on how to calculate the fee.  This form must be submitted with the construction documents and plan review fee.

DCAB created the DCAB Plan Review Fee Frequently Asked Questions Fact Sheet which includes questions and answers about calculating the fee, methods of payment, estimated construction cost, infrastructure projects, no application projects, and resubmittals.

If you have any questions about the fee, please contact Curtis Motoyama, Facility Access Coordinator, or Francine Wai, Executive Director at (808) 586-8121 or email at curtis.motoyama@doh.hawaii.gov or francine.wai@doh.hawaii.gov
