American Express shouts out for small businesses Small Business Saturday gains momentum
There has always been black Friday...the day when retail stores across the United States move from showing a loss for the year to showing a profit for the year. Then there was Cyber Monday when a big push was made to build on-line businesses volume.
The small Mom's and Pop's of mainstreet USA just got lost in this shuffle. Now we have a spokesperson in the guise of American Express. This is the third year for this effort and it is catching on strongly! Look for heavy national advertising and much editorial comment that will be bringing awareness to small businesses like Hanson Galleries.
Make your list, hit the big boys on Friday if you wish, but remember us small businesses on Saturday. Yes, we are talking about the Saturday after Thanksgiving day, November 24th. We'll have refreshments and we invite the whole family for a pleasant shopping experience. |

"Citizen Hearst"
Documentary based on the 125 year history of the Hearst Corporation
Title is referencing "Citizen Kane"
which was inspired by the life of William Randolph Hearst
The Houston Chronicle, a Hearst Publication, hosted a mind-boggling party this evening (October 31st) celebrating the 125th Anniversary of the Hearst Corporation. After champagne mingling, an 86 minute documentary premiered covering those 125 years of history and innovative spirit. What a capsule of US history particularly from the viewpoint of news/magazines/newsreals/TV/fashion/architecture/technology....even comic strips.
The social evening was topped off with an energetic performance by the incomparable Jennifer Hudson who sang and danced throughout the room. The Asia Society Texas Center's stunning venue was the perfect backdrop for the occasion.
I'm so naive that I couldn't figure out if all the security was for the Hearst top executives, Jennifer Hudson or the Mayor who made the welcoming remarks. The party favor was a wonderful photo and essay book published just for the celebration titled simply, "Hearst One Hundred Twenty Five".
Thank you Eileen for the invitation and thank you Hearst for knowing how to throw a classy party! We are proud to have the fifth largest newspaper in the USA right here in Houston!
