Viktor Schreckengost Mammoths and Mastodons Rise Again!
VS Pachyderms done

ICA was onsite at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History from May 5th through June 21st working with the crew from Cleveland Marble & Mosaic to install the monumental terracotta artworks, "Mammoths" and "Mastodons" by Cleveland artist Viktor Schreckengost. Originally commissioned by the Natural History Museum for the pachyderm house at the Cleveland Zoo in 1955, they were de-installed by ICA in 2008, when the Zoo demolished the old building to make way for a new elephant habitat.

These iconic Cleveland characters now grace the enormous wall in the Natural History Museum's Larry Sears and Sally Zlotnick Sears Garden and will welcome over 3 million visitors to University Circle each year. Kasota limestone from Minnesota is now being cut and set in place around the Mammoths and Mastodons and will cover the face of the wall. The Museum looks forward to opening the garden later this summer. For news about the Museum's ongoing renovation and expansion, visit their website at www.cmnh.org/centennialhome.

Caring for Collections

ICA is proud to have served our region for over 60 years. During that time we have established long-term relationships with cultural institutions and individual collectors alike. One such lasting relationship has been with Bob Koren and his private collection of early Ohio and Pennsylvania 19th-century glassware. A fine example of the work ICA's Objects Department has done for Bob is a damaged Bakewell cobalt scroll flask.

When the flask arrived in the Objects lab there were cracks along the neck and several poor repairs done with painted plaster around the bottle's neck and in its decorative scrollwork. The old repair was removed and replaced with conservation grade epoxy dyed to match the cobalt glass. The loose pieces were reattached, and the cracks stabilized. ICA's new repair was much more discreet and contributes to our client's enjoyment of the object.

Dixon Painting Sub Survey
2015 Subsidized Survey at the Dixon Gallery & Gardens
2016 Subsidized Survey
As part of our ongoing public service, each year ICA selects one collecting institution to receive a free, 2-day collection survey. The goal of the program is to help the recipient institution identify its preservation needs and plan future conservation and stewardship initiatives. The information gained through the assessment helps the institution prioritize objectives and potentially raise funds to address those preservation needs.

Any non-profit organization with a public collection, which can demonstrate a commitment to preservation and collections care is eligible to apply for this survey. Recent winners include the Dixon Gallery & Gardens (Memphis), Indiana University of Pennsylvania Museum, The Butler Institute of American Art (Youngstown), Huntington Museum of Art (West Virginia), and the Musselman Library at Bluffton University.

ICA will offer one collection survey focusing on a select group of artifacts within an institution. An ICA conservator will visit the recipient institution to examine the objects on-site for up to two days. Written condition reports and treatment recommendations will be provided after the visit. The selected institution only pays travel and accommodation expenses associated with the on-site survey.

The subsidized survey application and instructions for submission are available under the Education tab on ICA's website, or click here.

Where: ICA Paper Lab
Cost: $35.00

As part of Octavofest, Northeast Ohio's annual celebration of Book and Paper Arts, ICA is offering a hands-on encapsulation workshop. This workshop will teach participants how to encapsulate their own paper objects safely. Proper materials, environment and handling methods will be discussed. The end result will be a sample set of various encapsulation techniques for future reference. Materials list will be provided upon registration.

Registration: Please contact Jennifer Souers Chevraux, Education Outreach Officer, jennifersc@ica-artconservation, to register for this program. Class size is limited to 10 participants. Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
