Pachyderms on the Move

Last month ICA's Objects and Art Transportation teams spent two days inspecting and moving all 88 pieces of Viktor Schreckengost's monumental terracotta pachyderm sculptures from a storage facility in one of Cleveland's metroparks, to a location selected by the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, where they await installation next spring in the Museum's new West Garden.

The West Garden, part of the museum's initial construction phase, is located at the rear of the building, facing Martin Luther King Boulevard. When the Mastodon and Mammoth sculptures are installed, they will serve as friendly guardians posted at the entrance to University Circle.

Having advocated for the preservation of these important Cleveland artworks for more than seven years, ICA is excited to work with the Natural History Museum to reinstall the pachyderms in 2016. ICA Welcomes Claire Curran
Assistant Objects Conservator
Claire grew up in Fairfield, CT and graduated from the University of Delaware in 2010 with Bachelor of Arts degrees in Art History and Material Culture Preservation. She gained pre-program experience in art conservation at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where she became interested in modern and contemporary objects and sculpture.

In 2012, Claire began graduate school at the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation, specializing in objects with a minor in preventive conservation. She continued to focus on modern and contemporary art during graduate school through summer internships at the Statens Museum for Kunst, the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen, and during her third year internship at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. After graduating in 2015, Claire was drawn to ICA for the diverse objects and materials that come through the lab, and the opportunity to work in a public regional center.
