Last month, ICA conservators put the finishing touches on a truly grand treatment at Oberlin's Allen Memorial Art Museum. ICA's 8 month-long cleaning and conservation of the painted ceiling and clerestory walls in the King Sculpture Court, was completed on time for the museum's celebration of its centennial in 2017.
Cass Gilbert, the architect who designed the Italian Renaissance style structure to house Oberlin College's new museum in 1916, cared deeply about the interiors of his buildings. He worked closely with the decorative painter Frederick Wiley who was responsible for the painted plaster work design and the elegant still life and landscape subjects on canvas.

ICA's staff spent more than a year collaboratively meeting with staff from Oberlin College and the Museum to plan the enormous project. Archival research, materials testing, cross-section analysis, and the organization of timetables, teams, contracts, and permits all had to be complete before onsite treatment could begin.Teams of ICA conservators rotated through 8 months of neck-breaking work on the three-story scaffolding in the Museum's central court.The conservators removed 100 years of very dark surface grime, did minor structural work, in-painted losses, and aesthetically unified the compromised painted decoration.
The results are remarkable. Many strolling visitors, who stopped to watch the progress of the conservation work remarked to ICA staff that they had visited the museum many times, but had never even noticed that there was a painted ceiling. It had become almost too dark to see. Now, the ceiling is resplendent and we encourage you to visit the Allen Memorial Art Museum and see for yourself.

Free Public Tour
& Program
Where:
Oxford Elementary School
939 Quilliams Road
Cleveland Heights, Ohio
When:
Sunday, April 26th
1:00 - 2:00 PM
As part of the upcoming Noble Neighborhood Community Day on April 26th, ICA Paintings Conservator Wendy Partridge will speak on the history and conservation treatment of the four WPA murals at Oxford Elementary School. ICA has conserved numerous artworks in Northeast Ohio, including the Oxford School fairy tale murals in 2000.
The Oxford School murals, Cinderella and The Pied Piper by Gladys Carambella and Agriculture and Industry by LeRoy Flint, were commissioned in the 1930s under the auspices of the WPA's Federal Arts Project. They are delightful works and very significant in the history of the Ohio WPA. However, unless they have children who attended Oxford School, most people are unlikely to know about them. This guided tour will give visitors the opportunity to see the murals in person and to learn about some of the wonderful cultural assets that are part of the Oxford school community and the CH-UH school district.
Reservations are not required for this FREE public program. Two tours will be given to maximum of 25 people per group. The first tour will begin from the front doors of the school at 1:00, and the second tour will begin at 1:30.

Noble Neighborhood Community Day is sponsored by Noble Neighbors, the new Cleveland Heights neighborhood association encompassing the Oxford, Noble, and Caledonia school districts, with assistance from the City of Cleveland Heights. Meet ICA's Pre-Program Intern
|
Margalit Schindler, a New Jersey native, is a graduate of Kent State University with a degree in Art History and Metalsmithing. She hopes to pursue a career in art conservation. All conservation master's programs call for a myriad of requirements, including pre-program internship experience. Margalit is currently working at ICA to gain insight into the conservation world and learn valuable hands-on skills from the conservators themselves.
In addition to internship experience, master's program applicants need a heavy chemistry background. Margalit has taken a year of chemistry classes and is currently in the throes of organic chemistry. When she isn't helping to repair 100 year-old maps or studying for an organic chemistry exam, she enjoys cooking, laughing, long walks and traveling.
Margalit previously worked as the Balto Archives Intern at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, as an Art History tutor at Kent State, and as a Study Abroad Peer Ambassador. She also works at the Cleveland Museum of Art in the Conservation Department and at Crain's Cleveland Business on the Sales and Marketing team.

Cuyahoga Arts & Culture Report to the Community
|
ICA receives critical operating support through a publicly funded grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture. These funds support help ICA provide the many free educational programs and artistic services we offer to our local community and throughout the Midwest.
When dedicated tax funding was approved by county residents in 2006, CAC promised to put public dollars to work to support arts and culture experiences in every corner of the county. This year's report shares the remarkable work of all of CAC's cultural partners, which is how they deliver on that promise every day.
CAC's 2014 Report to the Community includes inspiring examples of CAC-funded organizations and projects strengthening communities across Cuyahoga County, and tells the story of why public funding for arts and culture is beneficial to our community and the residents of Cuyahoga County.
CAC funding, together with organizations like ICA:
- Enhances education by supporting learning opportunities for students of all ages;
- Enriches quality of life by making Cuyahoga County a vibrant place to live, work and play;
- Supports our economy by helping build stronger, more resilient arts and culture organizations.
While CAC-funded programs reach thousands of County residents each year, a recent survey indicated that only 31% of residents had heard of Cuyahoga Arts & Culture. Find out how CAC funding directly benefits you through its support of the ICA, and other cultural institutions like ours.
