Massillon Museum Subsidized Survey

Summer is here, school is out, and the days are longer. Now, is the perfect time to plan ahead for improving the preservation of your collections. It is not too early to download the application for ICA's annual subsidized survey and begin thinking about which of your special collections could benefit from a FREE onsite inspection and assessment.

Each year as part of our ongoing public service, ICA selects one collecting institution to receive a free collection survey. The goal of the program is to help the recipient institution identify its preservation needs and plan future conservation and stewardship initiatives. The information gained through the assessment helps the institution prioritize objectives and potentially raise funds to address those preservation needs.

ICA will again offer one collection survey focusing on a select group of artifacts within an institution. An ICA conservator will visit the recipient institution to examine the objects on-site for up to two days, and written condition reports and treatment recommendations will be provided. The selected institution will be asked to contribute only the travel costs associated with on-site visits. Program guidelines and the 2013 application can be downloaded here.

In addition, ICA Education Outreach Officer, Jennifer Souers Chevraux, will be participating in the upcoming Connecting to Collections Boot Camp being held in Worthington, Ohio July 31-August 1. Jennifer will present an introduction to collections preservation and conservation topics during the first plenary session of the two-day workshop. For more information on this and other Connecting to Collections programs, click here to visit the online community page.

Beginning next week, ICA conservators will be working on the painted ceiling in the Allen Memorial Art Museum's King Sculpture Court. Phase 1 of the project, which involves examination, documentation, analysis and treatment design will be finished this summer. Phase 2, which involves conservation treatment and renovation of the space will begin in 2014. A heavy grime layer and paint applied to cover water damage obscure many of the details of the painted scenes. ICA is collaborating with the museum, Oberlin College and Samuel Anderson Architects on this project.
Artworks_tour
On April 11, the ICA hosted a tour for high school students in the Artworks Apprentices program offered by Young Audiences of Northeast Ohio. A group of 31 students and their advisors learned about the unique combination of art and science involved in ICA's conservation work. During their visit they met with education staff and conservators, asking many questions about the life cycle of artwork, and the role of conservation in preserving everything from priceless Renaissance paintings to swords from the War of 1812.

Young Audiences helps students learn, create, and sustain future jobs in the art field. The ICA supports art programs, community organizations, and schools in developing arts-infused curriculum for all students. Art curriculum enhances a student's perceptive, social, and personal development. Through our art@work education program, ICA presents Science Technology Engineering Art and Math (STEAM) concepts to students ranging from middle schoolers to post-grads. We hope to sustain the future of art and heritage collections by encouraging young people to participate in their preservation for generations to come.

For more information about the student experiences offered through ICA's art@work program, or to schedule a tour of the conservation lab facility, please contact Jennifer Souers Chevraux at (216) 658-8700.

The American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC) held its annual meeting May 29-June 1 in Indianapolis. Four of ICA's conservators attended, and three presented sessions at the professional conference of their peers. ICA's paper conservator, Jamye Jamison, participated in a panel discussion presenting tips on map conservation to the Book & Paper Group.

AIC fellow, and ICA paintings conservator, Heather Galloway served on a panel discussing "Engaging with Allied Fields: Teaching Conservation in Allied Academic Departments and Degree Programs."

Additional information about the topics presented during these and other conference sessions can be found on the AIC blog, "Conservators Converse."
Erik_Schmittgen
ICA pre-program intern Erik Schmittgen, a student at John Carroll University, was awarded an internship to work at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC this summer. Erik will be at the Smithsonian's Museum Conservation Institute as part of the 2013 Analytical Studies Group Intern Program. He will be assisting conservation scientist Dr. Odile Madden in analyzing biological growth on objects from the American Indian Museum and using the data to propose a treatment plan. The internship will last 10 weeks from May 28th to August 2nd.
