wonderful brief history" rel="nofollow" shape="rect">![]() Les Gemmaux de France gemmail after Georges Braque's Aquarium sur la Caisse
A gemmail is an image created from multiple layers of colored glass fused together with clear resin, and intended to be lit from behind similar to a stained glass window. This one was created after a painting by Georges Braque entitled Aquarium sur la Caisse. It was fabricated in the late 1950's by a French firm, Les Gemmaux de France and was part of a traveling exhibit of some twenty gemmaux including others by Braque and Picasso. This piece at 39" square, suffered severe damage resulting in a large vertical crack with multiple fragments and distortion to the overall structure.
Prior to its arrival at ICA, probably many years ago, attempts were made at repairing the damage using large amounts of caulk which subsequently turned brown and was very disfiguring. The baked resin coating on the surface had begun to peel and flake off. ICA conservators and an intern have so far cleaned the surface by vacuum and aqueous methods. Loose flaking resin and the caulk were removed with scalpels. We have now begun testing to determine the feasibility of flattening the distorted panels by enclosing them in a solvent chamber and placing the fragments under weights. We will then re-assemble the fragments, fill losses and place the entire piece on a new piece of tempered glass as a support. We will build a new frame to hold an ultra-thin LED light panel to illuminate the image.
For more information about this unique art form and Les Gemmaux de France, check out this wonderful brief history written by Kelley Elliott, Curatorial Assistant of Modern Glass at the Corning Museum of Glass.

![]() Art Advisory Services
ICA Executive Director, Al Albano, is working with the Cuyahoga County Public Library (CCPL) system to help them select artwork for four new library branches currently under construction. Al will be consulting with the library system, project architects, engineers, and others involved in the building campaign with the goal of selecting artists who will create a unique, signature piece of art for each new library. He will work with selected artists to prepare and present design concepts for proposed works.
This partnership gives CCPL access to the vast artistic resources within the ICA: understanding of the importance of site selection, properties of contemporary artists' materials, consequences of environmental exposure to damaging agents (i.e. light, humidity, and airborne contaminants), as well as Al's familiarity with living artists whose work would complement the new structures.
In addition to proposing artists to CCPL, Al will also develop a maintenance plan for the completed artwork, and help guide CCPL in developing a collection plan that includes allowances for future donations and decommissions.
