TAKE YOUR HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE TO THE DEPOT!
You can help to keep dangerous toxins out of our drinking water sources. Round up the unused and unwanted chemical products around your home and garage and take them to your next municipal household hazardous waste collection!

Automotive products, varnishes, spot cleaners, wood preservatives, and furniture strippers are just some of the products that should be disposed of safely

Our drinking water comes from groundwater and also from lakes and rivers. Your actions can help to protect drinking water sources from contamination. Take care not to spill chemical products onto the ground. They could seep into our groundwater sources and contaminate them. Keep chemical products from washing into storm drains and ditches because these can lead directly to our lakes and rivers.  More on keeping chemicals out of water sources...

Some chemical products contain toxins called Organic Solvents and DNAPLs. These chemicals are dangerous to human health and can be very difficult or even impossible to clean up once they get into drinking water sources. The Quinte Region Source Protection Plan contains policies designed to help keep these dangerous chemicals and other pollutants out of our drinking water sources.

Please plan to participate in your municipality's next household hazardous waste collection event! Look for the handy new 2016 Hazardous and Electronic Waste Schedule from Quinte Waste Solutions, being distributed now to over 58,000 households in eight local municipalities. See the banner ad on it about protecting our drinking water sources from chemical products!

  SIGNS OF SPRING
Expect to see some new road signs this spring!

Drinking Water Protection Zone road signs will be installed where well used roads enter zones where accidental spills could quickly reach our municipal water sources.

The road signs will alert first responders of the need to quickly inform the appropriate authorities so action can be taken to keep contaminants out of public water treatment and distribution systems.

Local emergency responders recently received letters and a fact sheet from Quinte Conservation to explain the purpose and meaning of the new road signs.

Eventually about 780 of these signs will be erected across Ontario, with 33 in the Quinte Region.
