KEEPING ROAD SALT OUT OF OUR DRINKING WATER SOURCES
At this time of year road salt is often used to keep our roads, walkways and parking lots, safe and passable. Even though it helps to keep us safe, road salt can get into our drinking water sources and contaminate them.

Six policies in the Quinte Region Source Protection Plan address the threat to our drinking water sources from road salt. The purpose of the policies is to make sure that road salt does not negatively impact our municipal drinking water quality.

We can all help to keep chemicals like road salt out of our drinking water sources. Here are some suggestions:
  • Choose a 'green' de-icing product or use sand or kitty litter on slippery areas.
  • Use de-icing materials in the amounts and as directed on the package.
  • Redirect downspouts away from walkways and driveways to prevent ice buildup.
  • Do not apply road salt when the temperature falls below -10 Celsius (14 Fahrenheit) as no melting will occur.

MUNICIPALITIES REPORT ON PROTECTING WATER
This month municipalities with drinking water systems or significant threat activities are tallying up their 2015 actions to implement the Quinte Region Source Protection Plan.

Quinte Conservation provided municipalities with an easy to use reporting template. February 1st, 2016 is the reporting deadline.

Results will be complied and reported to the Source Protection Authority (Quinte Conservation Board) and Source Protection Committee.

The Source Protection Plan has built in annual reporting requirements. Keeping track of implementation actions helps to measure and assess the effectiveness of the policies in the Plan. Reports will also be submitted to the province as required by regulation.

Visit QuinteSourceWater.ca for more about protecting municipal drinking water sources.
