PUBLIC WELL SEALING DEMONSTRATION
A drilled well in the process of being properly sealed.
Quinte Conservation will seal an old, unused well at the Potter's Creek Conservation Area on Thursday, September 24 at 11:00 AM.
Visitors will:
  • see the well sealing process
  • see a groundwater model demonstration
  • have the chance to speak to a groundwater expert
An old, unused well can be a safety hazard and it can provide a path for pollution to flow directly into our groundwater.
Quinte Conservation is hosting this well decommissioning event to showcase the importance of protecting our groundwater sources, create public awareness and provide leadership in protecting groundwater.
WHY IS PROTECTING GROUNDWATER IMPORTANT?
Nearly three million people in Ontario depend on groundwater every day. It is the source of drinking water for half the residents of the Quinte region.

Groundwater is the water beneath the Earth's surface found in the cracks and spaces between soil, sand and rock particles. It is drawn into a drinking water system through a well.

Much of the Quinte region has very shallow soil over fractured bedrock. This means that contaminants or pollution on the surface of the ground can easily and quickly travel down the cracks and crevices in the rock and into our groundwater. Most streams, lakes and rivers are connected to groundwater.

There are many old, unused wells in our region. They can pose a safety hazard and a threat to groundwater. Properly plugging and sealing wells, through the process called decommissioning, will help to keep people and animals safe and protect our groundwater quality. Property owners are responsible for the wells on their land. In Ontario, well construction and decommissioning must be done by a licensed well contractor.

Our activities can impact or help to protect groundwater resources. The Quinte Region Source Protection Plan contains policies designed to help protect our groundwater sources.
