UC Nurses. We See Leaders.

Leading in Inclusion
As the only nursing school among this year's 91 colleges and universities to be awarded the annual Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award, the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing is as committed as ever to diversifying the health care workforce. The award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine recognizes outstanding diversity and inclusion efforts - something we strive to achieve everyday.

Through student pipeline programs, innovative practices and strategic partnerships, UC embraces diversity in the fullest sense. We are committed to providing a safe, diverse and inclusive environment that enables faculty and staff to grow as nursing educators, innovators and leaders. In diversifying the student body and enhancing academic and personal experiences, the college works to infuse the field of nursing with culturally competent and diverse leaders.

Leading in Nursing Education
At UC, we're focused on providing excellence and inclusion in all of our academic programs. Our Diversity Advisory Council sponsors ongoing events to provide awareness and discussion among college faculty, staff, students and alumni. In addition, the college's pipeline diversification efforts are comprehensive ranging from Leadership 2.0 and HealthPath Summer Bridge, which are designed to support underrepresented individuals throughout their education; New Careers in Nursing, designed to support underrepresented second-degree students in our Accelerated Pathways Program; and an extensive program to identify aspiring nurse scientists for our PhD in Nursing Research program. Lastly, we're proud to have several faculty recognized for excellence and innovation in education including Christine Colella, associate professor and director of NP programs, recipient of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Excellence and Innovation in Teaching Award.

What is Leadership 2.0?
Leadership 2.0 is a multifaceted program with eight components: pre-admission, summer bridge program, academic success, research experience, leadership and professional
development, socialization, community engagement and diversity enrichment. Program participants undergo experiences designed to prepare them to become a UC student nurse and future nurse leader. While working to increase the number of first-generation, underrepresented ethnically and/or economically disadvantaged students in the college, the program additionally helps such students achieve excellence in college and beyond. In fact, Leadership 2.0 students exceed first-year college GPA and retention (3.45 and 96 percent respectively) compared to other nursing students, especially of comparable racial and disadvantaged backgrounds (3.06 GPA and 90 percent retention).

How are we innovating nursing education?
Designated as an Apple Distinguished Program for leadership, innovation, and educational excellence, UC College of Nursing has re-envisioned what nursing education looks like. Our vision is: Through creative leveraging of technology, UC College of Nursing will lead the transformation of health care in partnership informed by the people we serve. In doing so, we've leveraged iPads, online technologies and active learning strategies to serve as icons for what innovative nursing education looks like. This also allows us to provide opportunities to a more diverse student population through our distance-learning programs. Professor Colella's interactive case studies are designed to give the online nurse practitioner student the same experience as students on campus.

Leading in Health Care
To impact social determinants to pursuing careers in health care, we've designed a Pathways for Emerging Healthcare Leaders Program in partnership with local communities. Funded for $2.5 million by the Office of Minority Health, the program is designed to increase diversity of the health professions workforce through targeted and contextual programming. Dean Greer Glazer leads the program with Karen Bankston, associate dean of clinical practice, partnership and community engagement. The program supports underrepresented racial/ethnic and disadvantaged students by taking a hands-on approach to showing students career options in health care and implementing a four-year academy designed to improve college readiness for both students and parents.

Join Us
"Our ultimate goal is to improve health care outcomes, reduce health disparities and increase the diversity in the health care workforce," Greer says. "It's at the core of what we do. I invite you to join us as a faculty member, student or partner in achieving our goals in this area."
