Shoreline Restoration Work to Begin at Seahurst Park

Local dignitaries took part in the ceremonial  groundbreaking Sept. 16.

Work will begin at the end of October on the Shoreline Restoration Project at Seahurst Park. The park will be closed to the public starting Oct. 28 although some upland trails will remain open. Some 2,800 feet of seawall will be removed and the beach restored in the northern area of the park. The main purpose of the restoration project, which also includes construction of a new fish ladder, is to enhance salmon feeding habitat. The $9.6 million project is funded from local, state, and federal sources.

Texas Firm Chosen for City Manager Search

The City Council voted unanimously Oct. 7 to hire the Texas executive recruiting firm Strategic Government Resources (SGR) to conduct a search for a new city manager for Burien. SGR's recruiting work has taken place primarily in the south, although the search firm recently found a new City Manager, Doug Schultz for the City of Bainbridge Island. Schultz was formerly City Manager for Normandy Park. SGR plans to conduct a community meeting in Burien later this fall to gather information from the public that can be used in the search and recruitment. Watch for further details.

A timeline for the hiring process will be coordinated with the City Council. A new City Manager probably won't be hired and onboard in Burien until next spring. City Attorney Craig Knutson is serving as Interim City Manager.

Council OKs Change of Garbage Haulers

Beginning June 1, 2014, Burien residents will see new bright green trucks collecting their garbage, recycling and compost/yard waste. On September 16 the City Council voted to enter into a contract with CleanScapes, a Seattle garbage hauling company, for these services for the next seven years. The new contract replaces the current contract with Waste Management which expires on May 31, 2014. In the coming months, residents and commercial customers will receive multiple pieces of information from CleanScapes outlining their new service options and lower rates. CleanScapes will be adding a retail store and customer service center in Burien.

City Wants Public's Ideas for Naming New Trail

The new trail will be built next to Miller Creek.

The City's Parks and Recreation Advisory Board is looking for suggestions and nominations to help name the proposed trail that will follow the planned Miller Creek greenbelt in the Northeast Redevelopment Area (NERA), a 158-acre area located in northeast Burien, north of the 3rd runway. Proposals for a name should include a reference to its location, history, natural or geological features, an individual or group who contributed significantly to the acquisition or development of the park, or to an individual who provided an exceptional service in the interest of the park system as a whole.

Send suggestions to Burien Parks and Recreation, 14700 6th Avenue SW, Burien, WA 98166, Attn.: Trail Name Idea, or by e-mail to michaell@burienwa.gov.
