 THE COMPASSIONATE LIFE
 The Soul of Kindness

During the month of MARCH Reverend Glenda and Reverend Judy invite us to join them on a journey toward acting from our deepest understanding of what life is, listening intently for the skillful means in each situation, and working with others in a spirit of mutual respect.

They will help us cultivate the capacity to be present with love for ourselves and for all life.

They will help us see that life on earth includes all of us carrying the ability to respond to one another with tender care and loving-kindness.

They will help us see that acting with compassion is not doing good because we think we ought to, but rather, because of heartfelt passion; no matter how difficult, sad, demanding, or even boring it feels.

They will help us see that compassion begins with ourselves so that we can cultivate compassion for others. As we grow in compassion we become instruments for change and for the healing music of life.

This is a perfect topic for these times. Learning ways to open wide to the reality of suffering in the world without being frightened or repulsed helps us to go past our ideas, the headlines, and concepts, right to the ones who hurt.

Compassion is a courageous path that brings with it the tender opening of our hearts to the complexities of the human condition and the world.

Common Ground is the perfect place for anyone who is spiritually independent and open to spirituality without borders. We are an open accepting spiritual community where everyone is welcome.

  •  PLAN A & PLAN B
     Going with the Flow

    FIRST....................................................
In keeping with Common Ground's commitment to support a sustainable planet by being mindful of energy use and in regard for those who do not drive at night, Potlucks will resume monthly on Sundays immediately after service when everyone is already present in spiritual community.

The next Potluck Lunch will be held on Palm Sunday.

Plan to bring a table-ready dish to share with 8 to 10 people. Remember, be prepared to take home leftovers and serving dishes and utensils.

    NEXT......................................................
Recycle Sunday returns to the third Sunday of every month.

Please bring your aluminum and plastic recyclables to the Chapel. Help keep them out of landfill. Thanks to Chuck Doty, redeeming them helps Common Ground meet operating expenses.

    AND........................................................
Common Ground's Choir is off to a good start. Choir practice takes place every Thursday evening at 7 pm in the Chapel.

Even if you've never sung in a choir before, you are welcome. Adolfo is helping the choir build skills from the basics upward to excellence. Come be part of the growth and blossoming of the newly forming group.

    Plus, it's lots of fun!

    ALSO..............................................................
Because Sunday services are now at the Chapel, there has been a significant shift in activity in The GreenLady Boutique.

Sunday shoppers have been the primary source of sales.

With that in mind, the Boutique area is in process of being slightly downsized and relocated within the Golden Circle Center.

This is good news because there has been a large volume of requests from providers and teachers to present their work at the Golden Circle Wellness Center. Scheduling and availability of space has become a challenge.

The room designated for the Boutique is in process of being converted to classroom space. Take time to look at the Common Ground calendar to get a good indication of the large number of opportunities for personal and spiritual growth classes and workshops.

The Universe is providing for Common Ground in unexpected ways.

    THEN........................................................................
Common Ground's new InReach Program has been a resounding success.

Reverend Stacie Buda is now accepting new team members who are interested in taking the InReach Training in March.

Training consists of four consecutive sessions on Sundays at 2 pm beginning March 8th. The training will take place at Common Ground's Golden Circle Wellness Center.

Contact Rev. Stacie for more information. Stacie@embracehumanity.com.

     MINDFULNESS AND SELF-COMPASSION
The Journey Toward Inner and Outer Peace

Common Ground is pleased to host an upcoming introductory workshop presented by Susan Faurot, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.

Susan has extensive training and experience in Mindfulness Based Compassion and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy for Anxiety and Depression.

She looks forward to helping others transform their lives through the cultivation of Self Compassion practices.

Susan asks the following questions of anyone considering attending the workshop:

  • What is the first thought that comes to your mind when you read the words self compassion?
  • Do you think, "Oh! Self care is good. It is in my best interest to attend to my physical, emotional, and spiritual needs".
  • Or do you think to yourself, "taking care of me is selfish. I always put others' needs before my own". If you are in this category, how is that working for you?
  • Do you ever find yourself feeling angry and resentful because your own wants and needs are never met?
  • Do you expect others to read your mind and anticipate your needs?
  • Do you even know what it is that you want and need?
  • What if I said that if you don't take care of you, no one else is going to?

Susan goes on to tell us that we are often our own worst enemies. While we might not be unkind to others, we often tend to beat ourselves up with harsh, judgmental thoughts that are repeated relentlessly and habitually, and automatically. These judgmental thoughts lead us to feel shame, guilt, anxiety, and depression and resentment.

The way out of these negative feeling states begins with self-compassion. When we can approach our own emotional pain with kindness and curiosity, the healing begins.

Kindness and a compassionate stance toward ourselves allows us to be skillful in our responses to stress, particularly the stress we place on ourselves to do more and to do better and perhaps, to do it perfectly.

When we are kind to ourselves, we can improve our own emotional and physical well-being, as well as improve our relationships with others. We can face our own pain in a manner that is helpful and healing.

Our compassion and kindness for ourselves translates into positive and loving relationships with others.

The Revs highly recommend checking out this transformative experience. If you want to learn more about self compassion, mindfulness, and mindful meditation, then please join this two hour, no charge, interactive introduction to Mindfulness and Self Compassion, Saturday, March 28, 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Common Ground Spiritual Wellness Center on Golden Circle Drive.

You will experience some mindful meditative practices, participate in self-compassion exercises, and learn about the mental, physical, and emotional benefits of a self compassionate life. This is a journey toward inner and outer peace.

Susan is also offering a weekly group, Developing Healthy Relationships, for people who struggle with issues of codependency.

The group will be held weekly on Tuesdays from 12:00 pm - 1:30 PM. beginning on March 3, 2015 at Common Ground Spiritual Wellness Center on Golden Circle Drive, in the White Room.
  • Cost of the group is $35.00/meeting

***A 30 minute, no charge, "meet and greet" with Susan is required prior to beginning the group. This can be done on the phone or in person at Common Ground.

Please call Susan for more information: 714-313-5198

  •  PRAYER & MEDITATION
May I Be a Protector for Those Without One

May I be protector for those without one,
    A guide for all travelers on the way;
May I be a bridge, a boat and a ship
For all who wish to cross the water

May I be an island for those who seek one
And a lamp for those desiring light,
May I be a bed for all who wish to rest
And a slave for all who want a slave

May I be a wishing jewel, a magic vase,
    Powerful mantras and great medicine,
    May I become a wish‐fulfilling tree
And a cow of plenty for the world

    Just like space
And the great elements such as earth,
May I always support the life
    Of all the boundless creatures

And until they pass away from pain
May I also be the source of life
For all the realms of varied beings
That reach unto the ends of space
