FOR THE BEAUTY OF THE EARTH
 Our Shared Planet

During the month of APRIL Reverend Glenda and Reverend Judy focus attention on deep appreciation for the beauty of the Earth and also on the immense responsibility of human 'dominion' over the natural world.

Thomas Berry, a leading spokesperson for the Earth, says we must develop "a new understanding of the planet Earth: this radiant blue-white planet hanging in the sky, twirling upon its axis in the light of the sun each day, swinging in its solar orbit each year."

We are invited to join The Revs as they take us on an exploration of the need for a mutually enhancing mode of human presence to the Earth; where we begin to see that what happens to the nonhuman happens to the human; where we begin to understand that every being is supported by every other being in the Earth community.

Each week they will help us embrace the dynamic dance between the essential core of ourselves, the Sacred I, and the intricate web of the outer world; the Soul of the World that is living, animated and conscious.

We will work towards falling in love with the world, to see that everything around us is a living, sacred essence, not an 'it'.

Thomas Berry says, "What happens to the outer world happens to the inner world. If the outer world is diminished in its grandeur then the emotional, imaginative, intellectual, and spiritual life of the human is diminished or extinguished. Without the soaring birds, the great forests, the sounds and coloration of the insects, the free-flowing streams, the flowering fields, the sight of the clouds by day and the stars by might, we become impoverished in all that makes us human."

Join us as we step toward bringing reverence for our human responsibility within the community of life systems on our planet, and, as we create awareness and support for environmental issues and for Earth Day 2013.

This thoughtful series of talks will highlight the idea that each one of us individually and all of us together are called to recognize our oneness with "the great divinity called nature, the luminous and numinous presence which has depth and possibility and beauty within it;" to sense the holy in all things.

Please join us at Common Ground for our 10:30 am inspirational service.

  •  NATURE'S BEAT
     Group Empowerment Drumming

group empowerment drumming To celebrate Earth Day, on Sunday, April 21, from 1 to 3 pm, Common Ground is pleased to present HealthRHYTHMS, an internationally acclaimed research-based Recreational Music Making program using in-the-moment drumming as a vehicle for group empowerment and wellness.

The drum is a powerful instrument. Indigenous people throughout the world refer to it as the heartbeat of Mother Earth and use it in spiritual and sacred ceremonial practices. The drumbeat evokes powerful forms of energy reflecting the pulse at the center of the Universe.

This afternoon workshop will be facilitated by Jamie Jones, a HealthRHYTHMS trained facilitator.

HealthRHYTHMS is an evidence-based drumming program that helps create a health-promoting environment. There are seven evidence-based elements in the HealthRHYTHMS Group Empowerment Drumming Protocol:
  • Stress-reduction
  • Exercise
  • Self-expression
  • Support/camaraderie
  • Nurturing
  • Spirituality
  • Music making

HealthRHYTHMS group drumming protocol has demonstrated biological and psycho-social benefits. It is used in a variety of settings including: conflict resolution, corporate team building, wellness programs, patient groups, schools and universities, senior citizen groups, long-term care centers, drug and alcohol rehabilitation environments, and at-risk youth facilities.

HealthRHYTHMS protocol is used around the world by doctors, nurses, therapists, ministers, teachers, musicians, drum circle facilitators, and more... .

Please join us. Everyone is invited to participate in this unique opportunity to discover a personal rhythm, get in touch with the heartbeat of the planet, and enhance the overall feeling of well being.

Monthly HealthRHYTHMS drumming circles will be held at Common Ground the third Saturday of each month from 11 am to 1 pm beginning on May 18th.

Plan to attend this introductory workshop to get a preview of this ongoing group.

  •  FOCUS ON THE ENVIRONMENT
     Environmental Stewardship Contest

Caring for Creation OCICE (Orange County Interfaith Coalition for the Environment) has received a donation of $1500 to be awarded to the winner of their Environmental Stewardship Sermon Contest. The contest is open to all faiths in the Southern California area.

While Sunday messages at Common Ground are not traditional 'sermons', nonetheless, The Revs will be entering the contest on behalf of our spiritual community by submitting the talks they will present during services on April 7, 2013.

Winning the contest would mean receiving a nice donation toward our current Capital Campaign to support our upcoming relocation. The winner of the contest will be announced at the OCICE Faith Leader's Luncheon on May 29, 2013.

Reverend Glenda and Reverend Judy trust that the inclusive and open message of Common Ground will resonate with the purpose and intention of OCICE's focus on Faith and Ecology. Caring for creation is everyone's responsibility.

Suggestions and ideas for the talks are welcome. Your support and enthusiasm will give The Revs the courage and guidance they need to give this idea a sincere try. They tell us they will do their best to inspire the judges of the contest. Wish them well.

     UPCOMING RELOCATION
     Mission, Meaning and Movement

Nurturing growth Within the next few months, Common Ground will be changing locations from Newport Avenue in Tustin to Orangewood Avenue in the City of Orange.

There is great anticipation as plans continue to unfold for the creation of our new Sanctuary and spiritual center.

Our move will give us a much larger gathering space for Sunday services and special events as well as awesome accommodations for classes, hospitality and gatherings.

Working together with the property owners, our architect and the City, we have finally reached a point in the process where we are on the calendar for a Planning Commission hearing to approve our CUP (Conditional Use Permit). April 15th will be the determining day for what comes next.

We have selected carpet, paint colors, and other design elements to create the perfect place for our spiritual community.

The elements of our new location will provide an awesome opportunity for us to host weddings, various classes and workshops, energy healers, and a variety of programs including drumming, art, movement, meditation, and more... .

Our new Sanctuary will be a place of beauty, comfort and safety. State of the art sound and overall design will provide a setting of excellence.

While we had anticipated a relocation date of May 2013, it appears likely that a June or July date may be more feasible. At any rate, the move will take place in divine timing.

Please take time to check out our new website recently launched in preparation for our relocation. Within the first two weeks of 'going live' our website had received more than 24,000 visitors from the worldwide community. This is awesome news!

Because our relocation has been delayed, the current Capital Campaign has been extended to April 30, 2013. We have nearly met our $90,000 targeted goal but remain approximately $13,000 under that amount.

Anyone who has not yet had an opportunity to support the campaign is encouraged to do so if at all possible. Every penny counts. Creative fund raising ideas are gladly accepted.

The Revs will be brainstorming during the month of April to find opportunities to meet our goal. Look for invitations to participate in ways that will help us complete our fundraising effort. Whatever they come up with will be fun and unique. Stay tuned!

     TITHING 2013
May All That We Give and All The We Receive Be Blessed and Multiplied. As We Give, So Shall We Receive ~ Common Ground is truly blessed and in turn becomes a blessing in the world

Common Ground reaches out to the global community through our spiritual practice of conscious giving.

Giving back to the world is an important aspect of our mission and vision. A balanced integral approach is reflected in conscious selection of 501c3 qualified programs and institutions to which Common Ground provides tithes each month.

Recipients of Common Ground 2013 tithes include: IONS (Institute of Noetic Sciences), advancing the science of consciousness and human experience to serve individual and collective transformation; Kiva, empowering people to lift themselves out of poverty; Project HOPE School, (Homeless Outreach Program in Education), helping children without permanent homes transition into the mainstream educational system; Walking Shield, helping to improve the quality of life for American Indian families; and, The Humane Society of Dover-Stewart County, a not-for-profit organization rescuing abused, abandoned and neglected animals and placing them into good homes.

The organizations to which Common Ground tithes are meaningful programs where people from the spiritual community and its friends are already serving with heart and hand, and supporting with time and treasure.

     CELEBRATION OF LIFE
To Everything There is a Season

lavendar rose A memorial service in celebration of the life of Sandi Kandel will be held on Wednesday afternoon, April 3rd, at 3 pm.

Sandi and her beloved husband, Mike, are long-time participants at Common Ground. Sandi loved Common Ground and her friends in spiritual community.

Her sudden passing leaves a void that only her unique human energy can fill. Her physical presence will be deeply missed.

One of the many gifts Sandi expressed at Common Ground was her passion for baking and culinary arts. She frequently hosted hospitality on Sundays, prepared gourmet dishes for potlucks, and hosted at her home numerous holiday feasts and dinner parties for spiritual community.

Sandi delighted is opening her home to friends at Common Ground and took great pride in sharing her surrounding and the simple lifestyle that she and Mike cherished. The Zen-like qualities of her home reflect harmony and calm that are expressions of her inner nature.

Sandi's sudden passing is a reminder to all of us of the preciousness of life and the need to treasure every opportunity to express love. Sandi knew kindness, love and compassion at a soul level. Her gentle presence will be missed by all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, Mike requests that donations be made in Sandi's name to Common Ground's current Capital Campaign.
