Parma Oktoberfest Carries Alpenglow

into Buford on October 25

Credit: Bradley Mickelson

In Germany, Oktoberfest spans the end of September and the beginning of October. In Buford, Georgia, the Munich munch and brew party is this Saturday, October 25 at Parma. Tavern staff members, garbed in traditional German attire, carry the rollicking theme to the max. They'll tap $3 Warsteiner beers for guests, grill bratwursts, bring out the salted beer pretzels and crank up the German music. Parma opens at 11 a.m. on Saturday and doors close at 2 a.m. Sunday. Oktoberfest rolls from noon until late.

Bite Into a Taste of Atlanta Weekend,

October 24-26 in Tech Square Midtown

Midtown's Tech Square sits on the most delicious real estate in Atlanta this weekend thanks to a feastly takeover by the 13th annual Taste of Atlanta. Foodies flock to the yearly three-day weekend of signature food samplings, interactive chef demos, beverage tents for wine, beer and cocktails, culinary competitions and entertainment.

No wonder, considering the roster of restaurants and chefs participating! Here's a smattering of tastes to anticipate. Article 14 will be there serving scallops with roasted French pumpkin pure and pumpkin seeds, and Der Biergarten will hand out German pretzels with mustard. Communitas Hospitality's 10th & Piedmont offers its famed chicken and waffles while G's Midtown presents turkey ribs. Representing Southern Proper Hospitality are The Big Ketch Saltwater Grill (Saturday only) offering signature boiled peanuts and mini lobster rolls; Smokebelly BBQ (Saturday only) serving pork rinds with pimento cheese, signature Brunswick stew and pulled pork sliders; and Milton's Cuisine & Cocktails sharing piquillo pepper crab bisque with chive and smoked chicken confit with creamed corn and pea shoots throughout the weekend. Try preserved Georgia shrimp with crispy chicken skin from Ink & Elm; coffee-rubbed and smoked Denver lamb ribs from The Pig & The Pearl (Sunday only); Tin Drum curry, Sing chow mein and crab and cheese rolls from Tin Drum Asia Cafs; and Trader Vic's Atlanta's Imperial beef and crab rangoon (Saturday only).

Marlow's Tavern is helping with the kick-off party on Friday night. Executive chef Derek Dollar of Milton's Cuisine & Cocktails dishes out his culinary journey and tips for cooks during The Chef's Table Battle of the Burbs experience on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Sunday's crowd can look for The Pig & The Pearl in the Chef's Green Room tent on the 5th Street Bridge. Bands, beverages and a tabletop Big Green Egg prize for the chef-victor stir up this friendly chef's competition.

Whole Foods Market is an event sponsor. Stop by area stores to purchase admission passes or buy them online ($25-$70 general admission/$75-$90 VIP experience for ages 21+). Best go ahead and take care of this in advance instead of chancing it at the gate. This event sells out, and a festival wristband is required for admission to the site.

Atlanta 10 Miler & 5K Zooms Out from

Atlantic Station with Chick-a-Biddy as

Sponsor on October 26

Atlanta 10 Miler & 5K participants can forget about sleeping in on Sunday, October 26. The first group crosses the Atlantic Station start line at 7:30 a.m. Wearing bibs, chips and pavement pounding footwear of choice, they'll tour Buckhead and Peachtree Road before carrying their revved-up appetites and metabolisms over the Atlantic Station finish line. After hydration, a banana and a good stretch, event sponsor Chick-a-Biddy is the next logical step for protein-packed, all-natural and pastured poultry dishes and celebratory beverages -- fresh-pressed veggie and fruit juices, coffees or morning cocktails. The Atlantic Station restaurant opens at 10:30 a.m. on Sundays for brunch and stays open until 9 p.m. (for those who prefer to go home and wash off their well-earned sweat first).

Be sure to look for her and gather some fall-tastic recipes and food prep tips at her 11 a.m. demo.

Pack Life-Giving Meals during the Big Peach MobilePack for Feed My Starving Children October 21 - November 2

Halloween candy is dandy but filling packs with fortifying food is where it's at this Halloween weekend. People all over the United States are packing up and shipping out at Feed My Starving Children MobilePack events. Atlantans can jump in and do their part at The Big Peach MobilePack going on at the North Atlanta Trade Center in Norcross over the dates of Friday, October 31 through Sunday, November 2. In 2013, more than 208,000 MobilePack volunteers in 38 states packed over 50 million meals! Atlanta's goal is to rally 5,000 volunteers to pack one million nutritious meals during this weekend event. See how you can get involved.

A bit southeast of the ATL, Cape Town, South Africa food photographer and cookbook author Sam Linsell hunts down delicious game and shoots addicting photos. Not four-footed game, more like pastries, pickles and don't-hold-me-back noshes @drizzleanddip.

MLA on the Town

We're posting a slice of MLA life this week from Gypsy Kitchen's family and friends opening party. This new restaurant from Southern Proper Hospitality is a tribute to the flavors, cocktails and cultures of Spain. Basque in the glory? You can, too. Gypsy Kitchen is now open on the second floor of the new Buckhead Atlanta development.

Coming out of our shells to admit it, we're Nutty for Nuts. We're raking in nutty recipes and squirreling them away. Crack open your laptop to stash these savories: grilled cheese with mushroom and hazelnut; apple-pear salad with maple-pecan bacon; chicken, feta and pistachio salad; and roasted red pepper and pecan pesto penne. To whisper sweet nut-things, make oatmeal ice cream with toasted walnuts, honey cheesecake walnut biscotti, lemon-pistachio wreath cookies or maple-rosemary cashews. We're letting some legumes slide in because who can resist spoonfuls of homemade peanut butter?
