International Woodworking Fair Attendees -- Carve Out Time to Eat at These Atlanta Faves

The palooza of tradeshows for the woodworking world, the International Woodworking Fair (IWF) unfurls at the Georgia World Congress Center, August 20-23. The virtual forest of exhibits and presentations on everything from furniture manufacturing and architectural and custom woodwork to flooring, upholstery and even plastics can whittle into mealtime leaving attendees to think they're limited to concession board menus. We wouldn't do that to you. Branch out and try nearby favorites for lunch or dinner. STATS in downtown's Luckie Marietta District plies hefty double-stack cheeseburgers priced at $11, $14 five-bottle beer buckets holding your table's mix-and-match selection of Coors Light and Miller Lite and 100-ounce ice-cold beer tubes for $18 each. Several options exist for attendees wanting to try some of the all-natural poultry dishes and regional specialties they've heard about. Flash those IWF tradeshow creds or badges at Bantam + Biddy in Ansley Mall or on Crescent Avenue in Midtown and enjoy a complimentary dessert with the purchase of an entre. Chick-a-Biddy in Atlantic Station offers the same sweet deal. To which we say, "Timber! Time for lunch!"

RE: Purpose, a Lifecycle Celebration Calls to the Keen and Green Out There on August 20

Fall is inching closer, alerting us to end-of-summer celebrations such as RE: Purpose, a Lifecycle Celebration on Wednesday, August 20 from 6-9 p.m. at Opera in Midtown. Indulge in local sips and chews, groove to live jive music by LBC and hit up the silent auction for interesting items created from Lifecycle Building Center's stash plus getaways, art, food and more. Bantam + Biddy will pony up a variety of sliders including truffle chicken salad, egg salad and fried chicken and chow chow for party goers. Executive chef E.J. Hodgkinson of JCT. Kitchen & Bar is contributing his "famous" deviled eggs as well as little cucumber sandwiches. So addicting. Lifecycle Building Center is an Atlanta nonprofit organization that diverts valuable building materials from landfills and repurposes them, making items available to schools and nonprofits for free and at nominal prices to the general public. In 32 months of operation, Lifecycle diverted 100 dump truck loads from landfill to useful. See how some of these items take on new life, and you'll look at building guts in a whole new light. Buy tickets online for $30 apiece.

Shop like a chef and learn how to make the most of fine swine from chef Todd Richards at the Morningside Farmers Market on Saturday, August 23. Richards, of The Shed at Glenwood and The Pig & The Pearl, will be working with pork from Riverview Farms, a certified organic farm in northwest Georgia. Catch his class at 9 a.m., and you'll be happier than a pig at the trough come dinnertime. Market hours are 7:30-11:30 a.m. Come early for best selections and to beat the day's heat.

Ale Aboard! JCT.- Terrapin Bar Bash Loads Up Crawfish Boil, Bacon Jam, Ooo-Eee Sauce, Atlanta Funk Society and More on August 23

Ale specials headline this Saturday's Bar Bash rollicking at JCT. Kitchen & Bar from 3-6 p.m. and sponsored by Terrapin Beer Company. Tip back RecreationAle and Hi-5 IPA for a mere $3 a can. A cup of beer punch brandishing Maggie's Peach Farmhouse ale (Terrapin touts 1,000 pounds of peaches per 100 barrel ale batch) is a peachy $6. Wait up. Even though titled "Bar Bash," chefs E.J. Hodgkinson and Brian Meiler pile on the chow. Their crawfish boil unites Georgia corn, Gulf crawfish and local potatoes to feed two to three people for $17. Bacon jam and blue cheese top the Original JCT. burger ($10) and a double-smoked sausage on an Alon's roll rests under a cover of ooo-eee sauce and pepper jelly ($5). The Atlanta Funk Society flanks the scene with 60s-70s-80s classics. Your weekend's on track if you're there.

Celebrate Eight with $8 Appetizer and Drink Specials at Milton's Cuisine & Cocktails through August 31

Milton's Cuisine & Cocktails in historic Crabapple turns the corner on eight this month, and chef Derek Dollar and staff couldn't be more eager to share their excitement. It's not every restaurant where farm-fresh means right off the backyard farm, a.k.a. Milton's Acre. Through August 31, guests can share the celebration and enjoy Milton's special anniversary appetizer or cocktail for only $8. The Cajun shrimp skewer rests easy on smoked bacon succotash and red pepper coulis. Served in a Mason jar, their classic Southern strawberry lemonade complements late summer relaxation and foils a lingering hot spell. Try one, try both. Celebrating eight is truly great.

Makan, Decatur's new avenue to Asian street and comfort food, dangles mouthwatering photos @makanatl. If food could take selfies, these would be spot on. Skewered chicken hitting the grill advises happy hour is coming. Sous vide octopus means they're making Korean seafood pancakes. Look closely and envision yourself in the patio-table lineup or on a stool at the bar...over there, slurping up noodles and dabbing in panchan. You! Yum!

Spice Up Summer! Our newest Pinterest board juxtaposes the fire of spices with cool summer drink, snack and meal ideas. Here, "spicy" is the prefix to fudge popsicles, 15-minute Sriracha hummus, glazed salmon and chipotle sweet potato salad. Heat hides in mango fruit and tequila popsicles, jalapeo margaritas, chili mango martini and a "caliente" cocktail. Consider yourself forewarned. Will you be cold with your guests or share the heated secret?
