Lee Schulman Turns the Corner on First Year as Historic Old Vinings Inn Proprietor

Old and new rub elbows in Vinings. Case in point: Old Vinings Inn, built in the 1880s, served the village as post office, general store, a filling station and family residence before settling into its current role as a landmark restaurant. In contrast, proprietor Lee Schulman marks his first year of Old Vinings Inn ownership on April 15. Enthusiasm and experience in Atlanta's restaurant scene meld like a good roux in this gent who believes he's exactly where he's supposed to be. Lee, congrats on a fantastic first year at Old Vinings Inn. We can't wait to see what the terrific twos bring!

Two to Try: 10th & Piedmont
Pairs up Sliders & Ciders April 16 - 29

Dare to be different. 10th & Piedmont does. Instead of matching wine with appetizers, they're inaugurating their first Sliders & Ciders pairing event, beginning Wednesday, April 16 and sliding through the month until the 29th. Hot, plump little sliders on sesame crust egg buns. Tall, cool ciders chase 'em down. Bite into these suggested dynamic duos: beef sliders with lettuce, tomato, onions, jalapeño mayo and cheddar ($9) soothed by Crispin apple cider; crab cake sliders with lemon caper aioli ($10) paired with Angry Orchard apple cider; BBQ pulled pork sliders with caramelized pineapple ($9) joined by Jack's Hard Cider Original; Buffalo chicken sliders with blue cheese ($9) chilled by Redd's Apple Ale; and seasonal veggie sliders with caramelized onions and Asiago basil aioli ($8) paired with a special draft cider. All ciders are $5. Regular menu still stands strong; it just doesn't slide.

Lap up Goldentinis and a Doggone Good Time at Adopt a Golden Atlanta's Golden Gala at the Atlanta History Center April 19

A few stray dog hairs on your little black cocktail dress or blazer are the perfect accessory for guests at this year's Golden Gala for Adopt a Golden Atlanta. Fur real - shows you hug your golden. That's what this year's April 19 gala at the Atlanta History Center is all about: sharing the miracles of rescued golden retrievers while enjoying exquisite food, famous Goldentinis, and wagging wallets over the live and silent auction to benefit these abandoned, huggable hounds. WSB-TV anchor John Bachman and wife Jen chair this year's 7-10 p.m. event. Info: gala@adoptagoldenatlanta.com or 404-364-5377. Stuck in the doghouse and can't attend? Dogs love donations as much as kibble!

Go Nosh Ganache when Chocolate South Demos at Williams-Sonoma North Point on April 19

On Saturday, April 19, Chocolate South cruises the northbound lane from its Westside home turf up to Williams-Sonoma in Alpharetta's North Point Mall. Amy Stankus, the bonbon boutique's owner and chief chocolatier, will show shoppers how to stir up silky smooth ganache, and she'll offer samples to taste. Because her artisanal chocolates are instantly addicting, she'll also have chocolates for sale in the store. A "tea-totaler" (someone who knows a whole lot about tea) from Just Add Honey Tea Company in Tucker will be nearby making tea to go with Amy's ganache. So you'll know, the Chocolate South shop will be open Saturday as usual for in-town chocolate fixes.

Bantam + Biddy's Shaun Doty Rises with the Roosters for Morningside Farmers Market on April 19

Shaun Doty is prince of poultry in his own roosts -- Bantam + Biddy in Ansley Mall and on Crescent Avenue and Chick-a-Biddy in Atlantic Station. His persona changes to strawberry king as he brandishes strawberries from D and A Farm during the "Shop with a Chef" demo at Morningside Farmers Market on Saturday, April 19. Strawberries rightly claim fame as a nutritional powerhouse armed with antioxidants and phytonutrients. We bet he shows many enchanting ways to coax the best out of this "berry" delicious fruit. Market opens at 7:30 a.m., demo begins at 9 a.m. Wise shoppers know to be there early and shop first, watch and learn after.

Luckie Marietta District Easter Egg Hunt at SweetWater 420 Fest

Not only is the lineup at SweetWater 420 Fest an egg-cellent attraction, but the Luckie Marietta District has planned a family friendly Easter egg hunt to ensure no one misses out on Easter festivities. The hunt will take place at noon on Sunday, April 20 in the Chipotle KidZone, and it is only open to festival ticketholders ($10 per day, $18 for the weekend). Additionally, golden eggs for adults will be hidden throughout Centennial Olympic Park and include prizes for SkyView Atlanta, concert tickets, SweetWater merchandise and restaurant gift certificates. Happy hunting!

Marlow's Tavern Posts Exciting Spring Menu on April 22

The Marlow's Tavern culinary team spent Atlanta's cold winter days conjuring up dishes and cocktails that scream springtime. Now, the kitchen is ready to press "send" and start offering the much-anticipated menu on April 22. Two new appetizers are crab beignets and smoked trout dip featuring Georgia mountain smoked trout packed in a Mason jar and served alongside house-made "wheat thins." Powerful new salads include a baby kale Caesar and two spring green-based items -- ahi tuna niçoise with Kalamata olives, parslied fingerling potato, jumbo asparagus, chopped egg and house-made lemonette and the Tavern salad with jumbo asparagus tips, sugar snap peas, and toasted sunflower and pumpkin seeds with apple cider and honey vinaigrette. Hand over a hefty new sandwich, such as the grilled lamb wrap with marinated lamb loin, baby arugula and chipotle tzatziki dressing or the well-pressed roast turkey Cuban filled with Golden Farms organic turkey, Swiss cheese, yellow mustard sauce and crunchy dill pickle. Favorites stand tall as in the crispy chicken stack of grilled Prestige Farms chicken, veggies, orzo and Dijon caramelized onion; grilled ahi tuna "Hong Kong-style;" salmon with blanched kale and couscous; and grilled center-cut filet mignon joined by jumbo asparagus, roasted fingerling parslied potato, seared cauliflower and classic au poivre sauce. Strawberry season places RumChata tres leche front and center among desserts. For a shot of spring in a glass, try Marlow's newest cocktails: the Left Coast Negroni featuring DH Krahn gin, Giffard Pamplemousse and Grand Poppy or the Chamberry Spritzer soused with Cathead Honeysuckle vodka, Dolin Blanc vermouth and berried by muddled strawberries and fennel bitters.

When chefs get new toys, they can't wait to show them off in the kitchen. Chef Joe Schafer is borderline obsessed with his new duck press, and he has added duck a la presse to the "For Two" section of the dinner menu at Ford Fry's King + Duke in Buckhead. The GrassRoots Farms pastured duck is served with duck fat-fried potatoes, kale salad and a cognac sauce ($75).

Whether or not you celebrate Passover, which extends from sundown on April 14 until the evening of April 22, you've probably noticed the displays of kosher matzo and other traditional Passover foods at area stores, such as Whole Foods Market. A fast grab for the Israelites centuries ago, this unleavened cracker-type bread is a versatile pick to use in many modern recipes. Oy vey! It's Matzo Mayhem!
