When Marlow's Tavern Said "Get Up in Our Grill," These Grillmasters Did and One

Won a Big Green Egg

The smoke has settled, and the charcoal has cooled. On September 14, Marlow's Tavern revealed "Get Up in Our Grill" contest finalists during a grill fest at the restaurant's Dunwoody location, and guests chowed down on samples of the fired-up recipes. There were no leftovers. Out of the almost 100 entries, one was deemed worthy of the Big Green Egg grand prize, provided by Atlanta-based partner Big Green Egg. Alphonse Nuzzo of Buford, Ga. took the top spot for his "classic" Philly-style cheesesteak bracciole. His recipe, below, looks primed for fall cookouts and tailgate parties - have at it!

Sheri Brown of Alpharetta, Ga. claimed the number two spot and a $50 Marlow's Tavern gift card for her Atlanta-perfect Coca-Cola ribs. Tracy Matthews of Dunwoody, Ga. now wears a limited-edition "Red, White and Brew" T-shirt, the third-place prize snatched with grilled smoked shrimp with roasted corn relish. Other finalists and their recipes include Marie Tinch of Orlando, Fla. for her F'ing Amazing ribs; Mary Johnson of Smyrna, Ga. with Korean "Firecracker" grilled pork chops; Denise Roberts of Smyrna, Ga. for St. Lucian bacon-wrapped BBQ turkey legs with curry ketchup; and Kerry Klock of Rincon, Ga. with grilled stuffed flank steak.

Alphonse Nuzzo's Philly Cheesesteak Bracciole

Ingredients

1 pound beef top sirloin, cut into thin strips (4" wide x 8" long)

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/2 teaspoon onion powder

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon dried basil

1 onion, diced

1 green bell pepper, diced

1 cup Swiss cheese, shredded

2 cups of sliced baby portobello mushrooms

1/4 cup of butter

Cooking twine

Directions

  • Saut onion, peppers and mushrooms with 1/4 cup of butter.
  • In a small bowl, mix together salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder and basil. Generously rub both sides of the beef.
  • Lay the strip out and spread the sauted mixture all over the top of the meat.
  • Generously spread the shredded Swiss cheese on top.
  • Tightly roll meat from top to bottom. Secure the roll-up meat with four pieces of cooking twine, evenly spaced.
  • Alphonse suggests letting the meat marinate for a few hours, but it can be grilled immediately.
  • Grill for about eight minutes a side, depending on the thickness or until desired doneness.
  • Remove it from the grill and slice in between the cooking twine. This will leave you with nicely cut, individual pieces. Remove twine and enjoy!

Get Your Wings Before Take-Off as
Buffalo Wild Wings Opens at Hartsfield-Jackson

You wouldn't say "Wing it!" to a pilot at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. At the new Buffalo Wild Wings location in Concourse D, however, it is absolutely the right thing to say. And while you're anteing up for Buffalo, N.Y.-style traditional or boneless wings and deciding on which of the 21 signature sauces to choose, ask them to pull one of the 24 beers on tap. Burgers, specialty sandwiches, naked tenders, salads and even a breakfast menu will please travelers any time of day as will the 45 big-screen televisions strategically placed to keep sports and trivia fans in the know. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide a perpetual runway view. Buffalo Wild Wings is open daily from 6 a.m. until the last Concourse D flight departs each night.

Is there a Rock Star in the Kitchen?
Atlanta Eats Live! Brings Celebrity Chefs and
30 Restaurants to Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre on October 6
Photo from: atlantaeatslive.com
Celebrity chefs are jostling rock stars for the limelight, what with destination dining, open kitchens, TV shows, social media and prolific "best of" events. Super Bowl halftime show potential? Possibly. Even better and more local, Atlanta Eats Live! brings rock star chefs, entertainment and 30 iconic Atlanta restaurants to Alpharetta's Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre on Sunday, October 6 from 5-10 p.m. "Atlanta Eats" television show host Steak Shapiro and WGST "Atlanta Eats" radio show host Mara Davis come together at this colossal event to honor Kevin Rathbun and Linton Hopkins, two rock star-status chefs for their work and commitment to the culinary community both near and far. Rathbun and Hopkins will square off for a chef showdown during the live entertainment lineup of cooking demos, chef karaoke and music from the all-chef band Five Bone Rack. Food and beverages will flow and are provided by Article 14, Lure, No. 246, The Optimist, Ray's on the Creek and more. Planned for an over-21 audience, the $125-per-person price tag includes all food, beverages and entertainment. Proceeds go to Staplehouse - The Giving Kitchen, which is worthy of a story itself.

are Out and Showing the Love

Blessed are those who have a favorite place to dine and share it rather than try to keep it as their secret place.
