Conservancy Honors Kimberly Godwin as Volunteer of the Year |
Kimberly Godwin was honored by the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy as its Volunteer of the Year at the 28th Annual Volunteer Awards Luncheon, hosted by the North County Philanthropy Council. The NCPC holds this annual luncheon to recognize those individuals and organizations who have given so much to our community.
Kimberly is a major supporter of the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy. Since 1988, Kim has been a Board Member, Membership Chair, Speaker's Bureau Chair, and River Valley Fest Committee Co-Chair. She is currently on our Advisory Board.
Kimberly believes it is critical to preserve the San Dieguito River Park to ensure that future generations will continue to enjoy the nature and hiking, biking and riding on the Coast to Crest Trail. "A native San Diegan, I watched Mission Valley change from an agricultural valley to commercial development. My passion for the park began after reading about Friends of the San Dieguito River Valley -- formed to preserve land from Julian to Del Mar. We continue to make this dream a reality," says Kimberly.
The Conservancy celebrated Kimberly and the other 61 volunteers chosen by their peers to be honored at this year's luncheon.

Citizen Science Botanical Survey |
Please join the Conservancy for our first Citizen Science survey of 2016! On Saturday, January 23rd, Keir Morse, professional field botanist & photographer, will guide us as we explore Bernardo Mountain in search of rare plants. We'll spend the morning compiling an inventory of trees and shrubs on site and mapping any rare species that we find. Don't feel intimidated if you're not a plant expert -- that's what Keir is for!
This is a great opportunity to learn more about the native plants within the River Park. We'll meet at the Bernardo Bay staging area and take an easy hike to Bernardo Mountain (approximately 1.25 miles) over the David Kreitzer Lake Hodges Bicycle/Pedestrian Bridge, the longest stress ribbon bridge in the world!
For more information, please contact Conservation Manager Jess Norton at jess@sdrvc.org.
Space is limited and registration is required. Please register here.

Planting Season in the River Park |
Planting season has begun! Park Rangers and volunteers will plant approximately 13,000 plants over the 2015/2016 season.
Our newest restoration site is at the San Dieguito Lagoon on a 1.78 acre parcel. This project is to mitigate for the construction of the Coast to Crest Trail along the Wetlands. The remainder of the plants will go along trails and in restoration sites where the Park continues to manage land by improving habitat. Many school groups and volunteers will work with the Rangers to install these plants throughout the River Valley and on Bernardo Mountain.
Contact Leana Bulay at leana@sdrp.org if you would like to assist in a River Park habitat restoration project.

The Conservancy held its first "Furry Friend Hike" on Saturday, November 21st. Inspired by our members who are always asking if dogs are allowed on trails or at events, this free hike series allows people to spend quality time in nature with their four-legged friends. Thirteen hikers and eight dogs hiked the approximately two miles around Bernardo Bay with a detour across the David Kreitzer Lake Hodges Bicycle/Pedestrian Bridge.
But that's not all! Our generous hikers brought donations of dog and cat food, treats and toys to help support to one of our partner organizations in the watershed, the Helen Woodward Animal Center. We hope you and your furry family members can join us for our next Furry Friend Hike on March 12th at the Ramona Grasslands!
