2014
Greetings!

We have a lot happening in and around the River Park this month. You will not want to miss a special
presentation by Richard Louv or the Conserving Nature in Life and Art exhibit at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido.  For those that like to get their hands dirty, there are plenty of volunteer opportunities in April. And be sure to join us for hikes, runs, yoga, a bike swap and much more.

Nature and the Hybrid Mind by Richard Louv
April 13
Join us for
an informative talk by Richard Louv
Sunday, April 13 at 1:30 pm

"The future will belong to the nature smart - those individuals, families, businesses and political leaders who develop a deeper understanding of the transformative power of the natural world, and who balance the virtual with the real. The more high-tech we become, the more nature we need."

Richard Louv is a journalist and author of 8 books about the connections between family, nature and community. His newest book, The Nature Principle: Human Restoration and the End of Nature Deficit Disorder (Algonquin) offers a new vision of the future in which our lives are as immersed in nature as they are in technology. This future, available to all of us right now, offers better psychological, physical and spiritual health for people of every age.

The talk is at 1:30 p.m. on April 13 and is included with general admission to the Museum at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. Do not miss Conserving Nature in Life and Art, an exhibit featuring Plein Air paintings from the past, present and future.

The Lagoon Preservation Committee was established by the City of Del Mar in 1974 by a group of concerned citizens who work to protect and restore the wetlands to a fully functioning estuary. The results are evident. Many birds, marine specimens and native plants have returned but it is still a work in progress.

Introduction to Bees and Beekeeping Class
April 26
Take your first step toward beekeeping!

Learn everything you want to know about bees; their habits and life cycle, the native plants which support them, and the diseases which threaten them.

An hour-long classroom instruction will include numerous photos and video clips to illustrate the amazing life of the honeybee.  We will spend the second hour outside where we will look at the parts of a typical beehive (no bees), demonstrate the tools of the trade, field your questions and taste some local honey.

This is an introductory class, no prior knowledge needed! Over the course of two hours we will cover these topics and more:

1. The honeybee -- its origins, genetics and life cycle

2. The hive -- an amazing community at work

3. Humans and honeybees -- can't we all just get along?

4. Difficulties bees face -- parasites, pesticides, diseases, habitat loss, colony collapse

5. Keeping bees -- why, where, when, and what you need

6. Helping bees survive and thrive -- making a difference

The class is offered by a member of the San Diego Beekeeping Society, in partnership with the Sikes Adobe, San Dieguito River Park.

Saturday, April 26 at 2:00 pm

Cost: $20.00 per person

Location: Sikes Adobe Historical Farmstead

Ages 8 and up. Seating is limited, so please reserve early by sending email to Anne Cooper, Museum Manager
