CAUSE MARKETING TODAY

December 2013

According to GlobalWebIndex, photo sharing is the most popular activity on both Facebook and Google Plus and the second most popular activity on Twitter.  No wonder we've seen more cause campaigns wrapped around image sharing lately.

Johnson & Johnson's 'Donate a Photo' app enables consumers to choose a cause, snap a photo and share it to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram in exchange for a $1 donation. So far, 118,509 photos have been shared via the app.

Susan Can, J&J's director of corporate equity, attributes the "amazing" response to the way the app provides a quick and meaningful way for consumers to engage with causes they care about. The app was intentionally designed to ensure the tangible impact of each $1 donation is featured front and center.

On a more local level, Boston-based E.B. Horn Jewelers fielded a holiday cause marketing campaign called Share Your Love. For every smooching photo tagged #EBHolidayKiss on Twitter, Instagram or the company's Facebook page, $10 will be donated to Boston Children's Hospital League up to $5,000.

A few tips on using photos in cause campaigns:

-Create a campaign hashtag. Most social sites now support hashtag searches, making it easier to quantify and collate your campaign images. Make sure the hashtag represents the cause and brand, if possible. J&J's photo app uses two separate hashtags: #jnj and #donateaphoto

-Provide incentives beyond donations. Whether it's rewarding the most creative photo or using each photo as a contest entry for a prize, consider upping the motivation level. In their campaign, E.B. Horn also staged a scavenger hunt around Boston, incentivized with jewelry.

-Keep it familiar. Engage consumers where their photos "live" - typically well-traveled social sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as the campaigns above did. Asking consumers to upload photos to a separate website can be perceived as too large a barrier to participation.

From the Cause Marketing Forum team, we wish you and yours a very happy holiday season!
