Dear Saints of St. Paul's,

It may have been a cool morning but the sun was out and the Spirit was present as 108 of the faithful gathered for our Pentecost worship and celebration.  Many thanks to all who helped to set up and decorate outside, tend the barbecue, bring offerings of food for our wonderful lunch... to Sue Cook who coordinated the feast, to Doug Pierce for taking our group photo, to Margaret McGee for candid shots, and to all who brought festive spirits... Thank you all!  Below you will find our 2015 Pentecost congregational photo.

A few months back we decided to begin using a seasonal bulletin, with Sunday inserts for music, in order to reduce the production time and effort needed in the office each week.  We have had some experience with initial designs and have solicited feedback and input for the next version. This coming Sunday we will be introducing a new and improved seasonal bulletin that will be used during the 10:30 am service.  The seasonal bulletin will be accompanied by a newly designed bulletin insert that will change weekly.  For the 8:00 am service there will be a single bulletin produced for each Sunday. Many thanks to Bob & Elizabeth Bindschadler and Laurie & David Neuenschwander (a.k.a. "The Quilbillies") for working on a redesign for Pentecost season.  The hope is that improvements to the design will facilitate the worship experience for all, and especially for newcomers.

Mezzanine classes are on hiatus until August when we will resume with a series of discussions on the topic "What does it mean to be a Christian-Episcopalian-Child of God?"  Stay tuned for more information on this next series.

Last week St. Pauls' Faith Formation Committee sent out a survey of interests.  If you haven't yet submitted your survey you may do so here:

Into a new season we continue to grow in the knowledge and depth of God's love for us known in Christ Jesus... through worship, learning and serving... as a community of the faithful gathered here at St. Paul's.

Blessings as we journey forward together...

Sermon

Pentecost
The Rev. Dianne Andrews

From Your Director of Ministries
With Families & Community

Dear St. Paul's Sisters & Brothers,

Pentecost descended upon us with in full, beautiful force this past Sunday.  Thank you for all who helped Sarah Carpenter and Celia Yesunas to take this next step towards adulthood with your prayerful hearts and words:

We recognize you [Celia and Sarah] as young women of St. Paul's.  We stand behind you on your journey.  You are formed by a loving hand and are unique expressions of the creative power of God.  God is with you.  God is calling you.  Explore, ask, claim, and embrace.  You are holy and wonderful and blessed and we won't look away from you.  We are your community of faith and we support you on this journey.

Would that we could all be blessed with such a communal affirmation!  And, through the Holy Spirit and each other we most certainly are.

This coming Sunday, our Art & Soul time begins at 9:30 am in the Fenn House with a focus on Trinity Sunday.  In Godly Play, younger children will explore the "Holy Trinity" and in our Youth Time, older children/youth will focus on the "re:form" lesson: "How Can God Be 'Three-in-One'?"

Please remember that this Sunday after the 10:30 service, we'll be carpooling to our mystery destination for our monthly, youth "Time Out."  If you haven't already RSVPed, please contact me as soon as possible: [email protected] or 385-0770.  We're not going far and we'll spend about 2 hours having indoor fun.  Please bring a food item to share with the other youth.

Finally, I want to offer a HUGE THANKS to everyone who planned and supported the ECW raffle!!! I'm blown away by this communal gift that will richly bless our summer ministries with children and youth!  I am especially grateful to Dorothy Schramek for birthing this dream and then working hard to get seed money through Thrivent Financial.  Thank you Dorothy for your generous, creative, loving heart!  And I also want to thank Beth Cahape, Pat McMinds, and all of ECW for coordinating ticket sales and making this such a successful venture!  ECW, you knock my socks off!

And, plans are well underway for our summer offerings.  The beautiful Pipia sisters (Phina and Sophie) have all sorts of fun up their sleeves for the week of Art & Soul (July 20-24), and several, local non-profits are really stepping up to help with our Water & Soul (August 17-21) week. Please do let me know if you can volunteer during one or both of these weeks.  Our current needs for both weeks include:

  • Volunteers willing to accompany/"shepherd" each age group of children/youth throughout our mornings together
  • Additional artist volunteers -- especially creative writers and visual artists during the Water & Soul week in August
  • Folks willing to provide snacks each day (Val -- bless her soul! -- is coordinating snacks... thank you!)
  • All of us to help spread the word!
What a blessed, FUN way of living into Pentecost!
Grace and Peace to you,

Rev. Tanya Barnett (Disciples of Christ)

raffleRaffle News

Dear Hearts of St. Paul's,

Wow! We met our goal for the "Art and Soul" fundraiser! Thanks to the  good work and generosity of all of you congregants, the women of St. Paul's ECW were able to collect payments for 295 of the 300 tickets we'd printed up for the Whale Watching raffle. Combined with  additional monetary gifts, our total came to $1,555.00. Astonishing!  Now, our summer "Art & Soul" children's program can get a much-needed  infusion of cash to help Tanya and all of her volunteers create  a

wonderful experience for ALL the children who come to our church campus this July.

Oh, and I'm delighted to announce that Tracy and Pat Garrett won the raffle. Be nice to them. Maybe they'll invite you along...

With love and gratitude,

Beth Cahape for Episcopal Church Women

Spiritual Direction at St. Paul's

What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual direction is the contemplative practice of helping people awaken to God's presence and action in their lives so they can respond in a growing relationship.  A trained guide listens and accompanies the directee, witnessing the Spirit's movements and encouraging healing and growth.

Who might seek spiritual direction?

People seek spiritual direction for a variety of reasons, including:

  • To be more attentive to the presence and action of God
  • Integrate spirituality into daily life
  • Discern and make difficult choices or navigate transitions with deeper spiritual awareness
  • Share struggles, disappointments or losses, with the aim of understanding God's ways more fully
  • Find encouragement for faithful living
  • Maintain healthy life balanceExplore ways of praying that nurture and deepen one's relationship with God.

St. Paul's Library News

The work of organizing and decluttering continues in the parish library.  More books are shelved and our collection has been enhanced by the addition of a large number of music CDs.  Many thanks to Sandy Smith for her gift of the CDs and to Sandy Dengler for the CD tower on which they have been placed.  Please visit the book sale cart in the parish hall to find an interesting volume that is excess to our collection.  Donations are $1 for a hardback book and $.50 for a paperback.  Proceeds will support the purchase of supplies for the library.  If you find that you have a book from the church library at home that you are done reading, please return it to the church.  There is a "return" bin on the lowest of the shelves.

Sunday's Lessons

May 31, 2015
Trinity Sunday
Year B

Collect

Almighty and everlasting God, you have given to us your servants grace, by the confession of a true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity, and in the power of your divine Majesty to worship the Unity: Keep us steadfast in this faith and worship, and bring us at last to see you in your one and eternal glory, O Father; who with the Son and the Holy Spirit live and reign, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

First Lesson

Isaiah 6:1-8

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another and said:

"Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts;

the whole earth is full of his glory."

The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. And I said: "Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!"

Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: "Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out." Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I; send me!"

Psalm

Canticle 13

Glory to you, Lord God of our fathers; *

you are worthy of praise; glory to you.

Glory to you for the radiance of your holy Name; *

we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

Glory to you in the splendor of your temple; *

on the throne of your majesty, glory to you.

Glory to you, seated between the Cherubim; *

we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

Glory to you, beholding the depths; *

in the high vault of heaven, glory to you.

Glory to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; *

we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

Second Lesson

Romans 8:12-17

So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh-- for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, "Abba! Father!" it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ-- if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

Gospel

John 3:1-17

There was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God." Jesus answered him, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above." Nicodemus said to him, "How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother's womb and be born?" Jesus answered, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be astonished that I said to you, 'You must be born from above.' The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit." Nicodemus said to him, "How can these things be?" Jesus answered him, "Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things?

"Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.

"Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him."
