            • 12 noon           Sermon reflection

Dear Saints of St. Paul's,

I have a "potpourri" of items today. First off I want to let you know that last Tuesday was Mike Yesunas' last meeting as a member of St. Pauls' vestry.  The Yesunas family will be relocating from our area in June.  Mike's membership on the vestry was with the understanding that he would be serving half of a three-year term.  We are very grateful for his time and service, especially in his leadership on the newly constituted "Budget & Finance Committee," a committee that has done some fine work during this time of transition.

Other items:

  • During our Mezzanine Time on April 12 Margaret McGee gave us a fabulous presentation on the history of St. Paul's to kick off our 150th anniversary year celebration.  Margaret has polished her presentation for distribution.  The flip book version of "St. Paul's Episcopal Church 150 Years of Ministry 1865-2015" is now available on the home page of our website:  www.stpaulspt.org.
  • A perspective article that I wrote for the Port Townsend Leader was published on April 29. The article, about our 150th anniversary celebration, was crafted around a piece that Mary Kell wrote about the first service held at St. Paul's on April 16, Easter Sunday, 1865.  You may find both pieces here:

  • We are looking ahead to Bishop Rickel's visitation during both services on Sunday October 18th.  A bishop's visitation is a time for baptisms, confirmations, and the laying on of hands with the a formal "reaffirmation" of baptismal vows.  This is also a time when those who have been confirmed, or made a mature commitment of faith in any other Christian church, may be officially "received" into the Episcopal Church (Note:  The previous practice of receiving Roman Catholics and Orthodox Christians, and confirming everyone else, no longer applies.) If you are interested in exploring baptism, confirmation, reception, or reaffirmation, please speak with me.
  • Nominees for the election of the 27th Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church have been announced.  The election will take place on Saturday June 27 during the 78th General Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah.  To learn more about the nominees click here.
  • The final count for our Lenten Offering was $682.29.  The offering has been designated to support the Jefferson County Backpacks for Kids Weekend Nutrition Program that currently helps about 150 students in the Port Townsend, Chimacum, Quilcene and Brinnon school districts who are food-insecure. Many thanks to Elizabeth Bindschadler and the Stewardship Committee for there efforts in making this offering happen.  And thanks to all of you who participated.
  • A "Go Fund Me" campaign has been launched to help our own Karen Barrows during her time of recover and recuperation.  The site's message reads:

Just as Karen was finally back on her feet from hip replacement, she fell and very seriously broke her ankle ( in several places). For a self-employed person, this is tough. She'd planned and saved for being away from work for a few months with the hip surgery but now several more without work makes it downright tough going. We're helping, and hoping there are more neighbors out there who will join in. Thanks much....

If you are interested in contributing, please visit the "Go Fund Me" site here.
  •  Our Senior Warden, Pat Garrett, has shared an article from the Washington Post:  "Want Millenials back in the pews?  Stop trying to make church 'cool."  You may find that article here.
  •  Jim Phinney has shared the following quotation from Alan Jones, the retired Dean of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco:

What a rich mix!

Blessings,

Call for Painters!

Work on the Judy House is coming right along. The fellows tell me they need help with interior painting. It's not a huge job -- a couple rooms and other spots that need a fresh look. Volunteers will be supported with equipment, paint, and good advice by the work crew. Please help this worthwhile effort! Interested? Contact Warren Leitch at 385-6427.

Seeking Input from Sharp Eyes

The vestry is developing a list of needed repairs and upgrades to our parish campus, and we figure that fresh eyes see things we might miss. So I've posted a manila envelope on the bulletin board in the Parish Hall, asking for your input. Besides the Judy House, what do you see that needs doing to keep our property (church, Fenn House, Parish Hall, Columbarium, and the grounds in between) in good repair? Jot down the project and put it in the manila envelope. Realistically speaking, I can't promise that all ideas will be done in short order. We have to prioritize, taking into account our resources in funds and labor. Items that affect safety and the physical integrity of the buildings come first. (Donations and offers to help are as welcome as project ideas!)

Thanks & blessings,

Margaret

Sermon

From Your Director of Ministries
With Children, Youth, & Families

Dear St. Paul's Sisters & Brothers,

This past Sunday during Art & Soul, several of us said "see you later" to the Judy House by drawing and writing secret, loving messages on the subfloor of the entry room (soon to be covered with new flooring).  The day's Gospel reading -- Jesus says, "Abide in me as I abide in you . . . I am the vine, you are the branches" (from John 15) -- sat at the center of our beautiful creation.  This served as a reminder that even though we may change abodes, we always abide in Christ.  We also offered loving words and blessings for those who would enter and live in the Judy House in the future.

After the 10:30 a.m. service, we shared in a "litany of transition" starting at the Judy House.  Here is the opening prayer we shared:

God of our going out and coming in,

we praise you for providing this safe, fruitful place for all of these ministries (Art & Soul, Just Soup, our Parish Wellness Program, the "Serendipity" 12-step group, Sunday morning Godly Play and Youth Time, and others).

Thank you for providing refuge for the journey, shade from the heat of the day, shelter from the storms of life, and nourishment for body and soul.

Continue, O God, to make the Judy House a safe haven for all who enter and dwell here; bless this place, that all future guests will know your abiding, loving presence herein.

In the name of Christ our refuge, Amen

After this, we processed with the children's Pascal Candle -- which they use each week in Godly Play -- over to the Fenn House to bless the ministries that will now take place within the walls here and WELL beyond!  Thank you to all of you who took part in this important ritual -- it is very hard to say goodbye to a "friend" like the Judy House, and your prayers have helped to provide needed support.

This coming Sunday, all children and youth are welcome to the Fenn House for Art & Soul Sunday starting at 9:30 a.m.  Then, during the first half of the 10:30 a.m. service we'll stay in the Fenn House for our Godly Play and Youth Time.  Younger children will explore biblical stories in which Jesus appears to his followers -- this is our play/work throughout this season of Easter.  Our youth (ages 11 and up) will start a new section on "discipleship" using our re:for

m curriculum.

Summer is quickly approaching, so please remember to save the dates for our faith-enriching, Art & Soul week: July 20-24.  Also, please consider Camp Huston as a place for children and youth to grow in faith this summer.  You'll find lots of information on Camp Huston posted on theChildren & Youth bulletin board in the Parish Hall and by clicking here.  Scholarships are available, please contact me if you're interested.

With Love and Joy,

Tanya

Episcopal Relief & Development (ERD) is working with the ecumenical ACT Alliance in Nepal and local partners in northern India and southwest China regarding urgent needs and assessment efforts following the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck near Kathmandu on the morning of April 25. An April 27 Press Release provides more information. We urge prayers (sample prayers) for all those impacted by the quake, and for those who are bringing relief, support and encouragement to people in need. If you wish to support relief efforts financially, you may donate to the Nepal Earthquake Response Fund. Thank you for your prayers and support.

Compassionate God... Draw near to us in this time of sorrow and anguish, comfort those who mourn, strengthen those who are weary, encourage those in despair, and lead us all to fullness of life; through the same Jesus Christ, our Savior and Redeemer, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen

  • To be more attentive to the presence and action of God
  • Integrate spirituality into daily life
  • Discern and make difficult choices or navigate transitions with deeper spiritual awareness

St. Paul's Library News

Our parish library, located in the foyer of Fenn House near the stairs leading to the upstairs offices, is available to all those with inquiring minds.  Come one!  Come all!  Featured in the staff picks section are some books that complement our Sunday morning Mezzanine offering on the study of various faith practices.  We have two books by Pema Chodron, an American Buddhist nun and resident teacher at Gampo Abbey in Nova Scotia, the first Tibetan monastery in North America established for Westerners - one of which is titled Comfortable with Uncertainty.  Chodron herself is featured in another of our picks Meetings with Remarkable Women.  Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh in The Miracle of Mindfulness offers gentle anecdotes and practical exercises as the means of learning the skills of mindfulness - being awake and fully aware. From washing the dishes to answering the phone to peeling an orange, he reminds us that each moment holds within it an opportunity to work toward greater self-understanding and peacefulness.

Collect

O God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as surpass our understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards you, that we, loving you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

First Lesson

Acts 10:44-48

While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said, "Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?" So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days.

Psalm

Psalm 98 Page 727 BCP

Cantate Domino

1

Sing to the LORD a new song, *
for he has done marvelous things.

2

With his right hand and his holy arm *
has he won for himself the victory.

3

The LORD has made known his victory; *
his righteousness has he openly shown in the sight of the nations.

4

He remembers his mercy and faithfulness to

the house of Israel, *
and all the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God.

5

Shout with joy to the LORD, all you lands; *
lift up your voice, rejoice, and sing.

6

Sing to the LORD with the harp, *
with the harp and the voice of song.

7

With trumpets and the sound of the horn *
shout with joy before the King, the LORD.

8

Let the sea make a noise and all that is in it, *
the lands and those who dwell therein.

9

Let the rivers clap their hands, *
and let the hills ring out with joy before the LORD,
when he comes to judge the earth.

10

In righteousness shall he judge the world *
and the peoples with equity.

Second Lesson

1 John 5:1-6

Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth.

Gospel

John 15:9-17

Jesus said to his disciples, "As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.

"This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another."
