 Sunday's Sermon

The Very Rev. Bill Maxwell
Reflections on Matthew 22:15-22
(no written sermon available)

From Your Director of Ministries
With Children, Youth, & Families

Dear St. Paul's Community,

"Where do you see God's image?"  This was the key question that children and youth explored this past Sunday during "Art & Soul."  Our Gospel reading from Matthew 22:15-22 evoked this question -- a natural follow-up to Jesus' remark: "Give to the emperor the things that are the emperor's [i.e., things that bear his image], and give to God the things that are God's [i.e., things that bear God's image]."  We used the storybook Old Turtle to get at different perspectives on how/where/by whom God's image can been seen.  Then we made small, rock turtles to place anywhere and with anyone where we perceived God's image.  So, if you see little painted turtles around our church and grounds, please stop an realize that one of our children/youth have perceived God's image in this place.

Our Godly Play time took us back to the desert -- back to the foundational stories of God's people in their 40-year wanderings.  Godly Play children will continue their scriptural journey in the desert until we reach All Saints Sunday (Nov. 2).

Speaking of All Saints, please please plan to come celebrate on Nov. 1st at our Harvest Festival for All Saints.  If you haven't signed up to help with this event, here's a list of items and help that we still need (please see the sign-up sheet on the kiosk in the Parish Hall):
  • Help spread the word in your community!  You can download the Harvest Festival flyer here.
  • Donate clean, label-free, glass jars (for making pressed-leaf lanterns).
  • Donate a PIE and/or other DESSERT for after-soup treats and for our "pie walk" fundraiser.
  • Help at the festival: greeting, assisting with craft making, cider pressing, and cleaning up.
Please contact me if you can help in any of these areas.  The greatest thing that we can all do to help with the festival is to come and ENJOY IT!  The more people we have crafting, dancing, and getting pleasantly sticky with apple juice, the more blessed our day will be!!

A reminder to our Rite 13 group: we will meet at my house this
Our last visit to the Olympic Roller Rink
Friday, October 24 from 5:45-7:15 p.m.  We'll be in the yurt, so please wear warm socks.

Our next, youth "Time Out" will be this Sunday, October 26 at the Olympic Skate Center (roller rink) in Port Angeles.  We'll leave after church and Elaine Grimm has graciously offered to transport as many of us as possible.  The cost is $4/person... please bring extra money for their snack bar, as they don't allow any outside food or drinks.  Please RSVP with me.

A friendly reminder: we still need assistants to help on Sunday mornings.  Please sign up to be an assistant in the Parish Hall -- I guarantee* that you'll have an enriching time with us if you do!

With Love and Joy,

MAKING A HOME IN PRAYER

9:30 a.m. Pollard Room

 Writing Prayers of the People

Last Sunday (Oct. 12), Christine Hemp led the first in a 3-part series, "Writing Prayers of the People."  We experimented with writing prayers of supplication that arise out of our daily lives and ordinary concerns.  Despite most of us being inexperienced with writing such prayers, the prayers we wrote were vivid, heartfelt, and authentic.

Christine will lead two more sessions -- this coming week focusing on prayers of gratitude.  Here's Christine's description of the series:

The liturgical Prayers of the People are not just for "writers," nor are they for people who "know how to pray."  None of us really knows anyway; we all just stumble through, trying to reach God in the best way we can.  And sometimes this means no words at all.  The Writing Prayers Mezzanine Series -- you may attend one or all three! -- will offer the space and a few tools to shape your utterances.  We will address prayers of supplication, thanks, and praise, calling upon our own vernacular, our intimate quirks, and explore the mystery of hailing the Holy Other.

Come and join us!

NEW COFFEE HOUR SCHEDULE!

In an effort to make the coffee hour schedule easier for everyone, a decision has been made to divide the month into 4 Sundays, starting on November 2nd, as follows:

First Sunday of the month: last names A-G

Second Sunday of the month: last names H-Mc

Third Sunday of the month: last names Me-R

Fourth Sunday of the month: last names S-Z

  • When there's a fifth Sunday, different committees/groups will be invited to sign up on the bulletin board in the Parish Hall.

  • This applies to the 8 o'clock AND 10:30 coffee hours.

  • The Youth Group has already volunteered to set up and clean up for the 10:30 service on the second Sunday of the month. (They won't be providing snacks.)

Diocesan Convention is Approaching

As your delegates to the Diocesan Convention November 7-8 in Seattle, we are open to your opinions about any of the actions we will be voting on.  These include ratifying a balanced 2015 budget (recommended by the Diocesan Council), electing officers to various Diocesan committees (most nominees are running unopposed) and three specific resolutions (the most significant being a reduction of our Diocesan assessment to 16% for 2016, from the current rate of 17% for 2014 and 2015).  More information can be found at

Sunday's Lessons

Deuteronomy 34:1-12

Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho, and the LORD showed him the whole land: Gilead as far as Dan, all Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Western Sea, the Negeb, and the Plain-- that is, the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees-- as far as Zoar. The LORD said to him, "This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, `I will give it to your descendants'; I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there." Then Moses, the servant of the LORD, died there in the land of Moab, at the LORD's command. He was buried in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth-peor, but no one knows his burial place to this day. Moses was one hundred twenty years old when he died; his sight was unimpaired and his vigor had not abated. The Israelites wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days; then the period of mourning for Moses was ended.

Joshua son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, because Moses had laid his hands on him; and the Israelites obeyed him, doing as the LORD had commanded Moses.

Never since has there arisen a prophet in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face. He was unequaled for all the signs and wonders that the LORD sent him to perform in the land of Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants and his entire land, and for all the mighty deeds and all the terrifying displays of power that Moses performed in the sight of all Israel.

Psalm 90:1-6, 13-17 Page 717, BCP
Domine, refugium

1

Lord, you have been our refuge *
from one generation to another.

2

Before the mountains were brought forth,
or the land and the earth were born, *
from age to age you are God.

3

You turn us back to the dust and say, *
"Go back, O child of earth."

4

For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past *
and like a watch in the night.

5

You sweep us away like a dream; *
we fade away suddenly like the grass.

6

In the morning it is green and flourishes; *
in the evening it is dried up and withered.

13

Return, O LORD; how long will you tarry? *
be gracious to your servants.

14

Satisfy us by your loving-kindness in the morning; *
so shall we rejoice and be glad all the days of our life.

15

Make us glad by the measure of the days that you afflicted us *
and the years in which we suffered adversity.

16

Show your servants your works *
and your splendor to their children.

17

May the graciousness of the LORD our God be upon us; *
prosper the work of our hands;
prosper our handiwork.

1 Thessalonians 2:1-8

You yourselves know, brothers and sisters, that our coming to you was not in vain, but though we had already suffered and been shamefully mistreated at Philippi, as you know, we had courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in spite of great opposition. For our appeal does not spring from deceit or impure motives or trickery, but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the message of the gospel, even so we speak, not to please mortals, but to please God who tests our hearts. As you know and as God is our witness, we never came with words of flattery or with a pretext for greed; nor did we seek praise from mortals, whether from you or from others, though we might have made demands as apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, like a nurse tenderly caring for her own children. So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you have become very dear to us.

Matthew 22:34-46

When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. "Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?" He said to him, "`You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: `You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets."

Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them this question: "What do you think of the Messiah? Whose son is he?" They said to him, "The son of David." He said to them, "How is it then that David by the Spirit calls him Lord, saying,

`The Lord said to my Lord,

"Sit at my right hand,

until I put your enemies under your feet"'?
