Dear People of St. Paul's,
Cottage Meetings are in process. Your Stewardship Committee has put together a fine program for these gatherings. If you have not yet signed-up for a Cottage Meeting, I hope that you will do so. It is good to gather in a time set apart from our routines. There is much to learn from one another, new acquaintances to be made, and much gratitude to be expressed. Sign-up sheets may be found on the stand-alone bulletin board in the Parish Hall.
Friday I begin my final week of vacation for the year and look forward to being refreshed by a silent retreat at St. Placid Priory in Lacey. You will be in my prayers... please keep me in yours. It is so good to drink deeply from the wells of quiet and contemplation. Fr. Bill Maxwell will be preaching and celebrating this coming Sunday (10/19) and Wednesday (10/22). He will also be facilitating this Sunday's Mezzanine session of "Inquiring Minds: Episcopalianism 101." As I mention below, this is an opportunity for you to bring your "big questions" to one among us who has served the church, as a priest, for 65 years.
A footnote from the Blessing of the Animals in honor of St. Francis (10/5): a photograph from our event made it to the Episcopal Church's large photo album of 2014 animal blessings! Check it out: http://library.episcopalchurch.org/gallery/blessing-animals. You should find Buddy (Christine Hemp's beloved equine companion) receiving his blessing on about page 2 of the album.
If you go to our parish website, www.stpaulspt.org, you will notice that you can now access the archive of our weekly newsletter beginning with September 24th's edition. Slowly but surely we are adding content and capability to the website. Please look around the site. I invite feedback and suggestions.
In last week's edition of the newsletter I mentioned that we were suspending the birthday and anniversary card ministry because of budget constraints. Thanks to Roger Davis we have cards containing his fine art work! In the near future Roger will be making an appeal for books of postage stamps to cover the rest of the expense of this ministry. God provides and is working in our midst! We are grateful!
This coming Saturday is the first event of our "Mystics & Saints" series. The session will focus on Hildegard of Bingen (press here for link).
Today is the feast day of St. Teresa of Avila. We celebrated her during this morning's service of Healing & Holy Eucharist and will do so again, this evening, at the opening Eucharist for our Vestry meeting. I would like to share some quotes from this 16th century Spanish mystic reformer of the Carmelite Order:
Let nothing upset you,
Let nothing frighten you.
Everything is changing;
God alone is changeless.
Patience attains the goal.
Who has god lacks nothing;
God alone fills all her needs.
-The "Bookmark Prayer" of Teresa of Avila
All things must come to the soul from its roots, from where it is planted.
The tree that is beside the running water is fresher and gives more fruit.
Life in Christ... remember the source... living water... drink deeply....
Blessings,
Dianne+

Sunday's Sermon

From Your Director of Ministries
With Children, Youth, & Families
Dear St. Paul's Community,
This past "Art & Soul Sunday" time found the children and youth outside in Bet Shira's sukkah -- a special, temporary structure in which this community (and Jewish communities all over the world) remembers God's sheltering grace that was so very present during their ancestors' 40-year exodus from slavery in Egypt through the desert. Our friends from Bet Shira have celebrated the year's harvest, shared meals, prayed, and sung ancient words under this shelter every day over the last week. In this place, we too enjoyed fruits of the harvest (including a cobbler made with fruit from the Yesunas' yard) and created

decorations to welcome people to our own, upcoming Harvest Festival.
With "welcome" as the theme of our time this past Sunday morning, we briefly explored the day's Gospel (Matthew 22:1-14) that implores: "Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet." Then, continuing with this welcoming theme, the youth and Kathleen Schott hosted the morning's coffee hour -- a gift that Kathleen and the youth will now offer every second Sunday of the month. Thank you dear friends!
We all -- children, youth, adults -- have an upcoming opportunity to welcome the broader community to enjoy the fruits of God's grace so abundant here at St. Paul's: Nov. 1st Harvest Festival for All Saints. If you haven't signed up to help with this event, here's a list of items and help that we still need (I will post this list on the sign-up kiosk in the Parish Hall):
- Help spread the word in your community! You can download the Harvest Festival flyer here.
- Help procure a cider press.
- Donate farm/garden items (e.g., pumpkins, corn stalks, straw bales) and/or handmade crafts/arts (e.g., knitted items, preserves, etc.) to sell.
- Donate a pie for our "pie walk."
- Collect items for craft tables: clean, label-free, glass jars; pressed leaves; embroidery floss; felt.
- Help at the festival: greeting, serving soup, assisting with craft making, and cleaning up.
Please contact me if you can help in any of these areas. The greatest thing that we can all do to help with the festival is to come and ENJOY IT! The more people we have crafting, dancing, and getting pleasantly sticky with apple juice, the more blessed our day will be!!

Our last visit to the Olympic Roller Rink

Friday, October 24 from 5:45-7:15 p.m. We'll be in the yurt, so please wear warm socks.
Our next, youth "Time Out" will be on Sunday, October 26 at the Olympic Roller Rink in PortAngeles. We'll leave after church and Elaine Grimm has graciously offered to transport as many of us as possible. The cost is $4/person... please bring extra money for their snack bar, as they don't allow any outside food or drinks. Please RSVP with me.
A friendly reminder: we still need assistants to help on Sunday mornings. Please sign up to be an assistant in the Parish Hall -- I guarantee* that you'll have an enriching time with us if you do!
With Love and Joy,

Writing Prayers of the People
Last Sunday (Oct. 12), Christine Hemp led the first in a 3-part series, "Writing Prayers of the People." We experimented with writing prayers of supplication that arise out of our daily lives and ordinary concerns. Despite most of us being inexperienced with writing such prayers, the prayers we wrote were vivid, heartfelt, and authentic.
Christine will lead two more sessions -- this coming week focusing on prayers of gratitude. Here's Christine's description of the series:
The liturgical Prayers of the People are not just for "writers," nor are they for people who "know how to pray." None of us really knows anyway; we all just stumble through, trying to reach God in the best way we can. And sometimes this means no words at all. The Writing Prayers Mezzanine Series -- you may attend one or all three! -- will offer the space and a few tools to shape your utterances. We will address prayers of supplication, thanks, and praise, calling upon our own vernacular, our intimate quirks, and explore the mystery of hailing the Holy Other.
This coming Saturday morning, Oct. 18, Elisabeth Rotchford Haight will lead the first retreat in a series, "Praying with Saints and Mystics." Focusing on the spirituality of Hildegarde of Bingen, this retreat will be held in the Parish Hall. All are welcome.
Come and join us!

Sunday's Lessons
Exodus 33:12-23
Moses said to the LORD, "See, you have said to me, `Bring up this people'; but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, `I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.' Now if I have found favor in your sight, show me your ways, so that I may know you and find favor in your sight. Consider too that this nation is your people." He said, "My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest." And he said to him, "If your presence will not go, do not carry us up from here. For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people, unless you go with us? In this way, we shall be distinct, I and your people, from every people on the face of the earth."
The LORD said to Moses, "I will do the very thing that you have asked; for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name." Moses said, "Show me your glory, I pray." And he said, "I will make all my goodness pass before you, and will proclaim before you the name, `The LORD'; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. But," he said, "you cannot see my face; for no one shall see me and live." And the LORD continued, "See, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock; and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by; then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back; but my face shall not be seen."
Psalm 96:1-9 Page 725, BCP
Cantate Domino
1
Sing to the LORD a new song; * sing to the LORD, all the whole earth.
2
Sing to the LORD and bless his Name; * proclaim the good news of his salvation from day to day.
3
Declare his glory among the nations * and his wonders among all peoples.
4
For great is the LORD and greatly to be praised; * he is more to be feared than all gods.
5
As for all the gods of the nations, they are but idols; * but it is the LORD who made the heavens.
6
Oh, the majesty and magnificence of his presence! * Oh, the power and the splendor of his sanctuary!
7
Ascribe to the LORD, you families of the peoples; * ascribe to the LORD honor and power.
8
Ascribe to the LORD the honor due his Name; * bring offerings and come into his courts.
9
Worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness; * let the whole earth tremble before him.
1 Thessalonians 1:1-10
Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:
Grace to you and peace.
We always give thanks to God for all of you and mention you in our prayers, constantly remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. For we know, brothers and sisters beloved by God, that he has chosen you, because our message of the gospel came to you not in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction; just as you know what kind of persons we proved to be among you for your sake. And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for in spite of persecution you received the word with joy inspired by the Holy Spirit, so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. For the word of the Lord has sounded forth from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but in every place your faith in God has become known, so that we have no need to speak about it. For the people of those regions report about us what kind of welcome we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols, to serve a living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead-- Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath that is coming.
Matthew 22:15-22
The Pharisees went and plotted to entrap Jesus in what he said. So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God in accordance with truth, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality. Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?" But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, "Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the coin used for the tax." And they brought him a denarius. Then he said to them, "Whose head is this, and whose title?" They answered, "The emperor's." Then he said to them, "Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor's, and to God the things that are God's." When they heard this, they were amazed; and they left him and went away.
