ADAPTING URBAN VACANT LAND TO MITIGATE HAZARDS
February 26, 2016
12:00pm - 1:00pm CT

  Free Registration!

In cooperation with the American Planning Association (APA), the Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM) presents the third Planning Information Exchange (PIE) webinar. PIE is a free eight-part quarterly webinar series focusing on tools, best practices, and strategies on the role of hazard mitigation planning and its connections with recovery planning and preparedness.

The fifth part in the series involves discussions with the Deputy Director for Land Use and Policy for the Detroit Future City (DFC) Implementation Office in Detroit, MI, Dara O'Byrne, Manager of Innovative Landscapes for the Detroit Future City (DFC) Implementation Office in Detroit, MI, Erin Kelly, and Jenny Guillaume, an Environmental Planner and Growing Green Initiative Coordinator in Baltimore, MD. Dara is working on reforming policy and regulations in Detroit, with a focus on land use. Erin has worked on initiatives focused on the partnered implementation of green infrastructure and land stewardship, as well as continued advocacy for a people and resource sensitive approach to building removal activities. And Jenny focuses on developing sustainable greening strategies for vacant lots and coordinating City agencies, non-profit partners, and residents in vacant lot transformation. Jim Schwab, Manager of the APA Hazards Planning Center, will moderate as the three professionals discuss how their communities translated mitigation goals in two very different but similar environments, Detroit and Baltimore. Learn what makes for successful strategies in adapting green infrastructure and hazard mitigation in areas experiencing blight and high vacancy rates.
