NOVA salud logo NOVA Salud, a Northern Virginia HIV/AIDS education and prevention nonprofit organization, is committed to its goal to break down barriers to HIV/AIDS services and fight the social stigma surrounding HIV and AIDS. It intentionally reaches out to all, and is inclusive of young people and people whose first language is Spanish.  NOVA Salud provides testing, information and referral to Northern Virginians. Their Face-to-Face program provides HIV positive speakers to Arlington high schools, their T-SISTA program provides risk reduction and life skills training to transgender people, and they provide testing and referral for treatment for HIV, hepatitis C, and syphilis. In addition, they provide mental health services for Spanish speakers. They have a formal relationship with the INOVA Juniper program for those who need treatment.
UUCA has partnered with NOVASalud during the year. For their service project, a Covenant group packed safe sex kits for NovaSalud and Equality UUCA plans to another packing party later in the year.  This Sunday, for the second year, UUCA will dedicate its morning offering to support NOVA Salud's work, and in gratitude for our support, representatives will join us this Sunday, to answer questions.

Governance Update from the Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees held an unscheduled meeting with the staff and Finance Committee Tuesday. We discussed an endowment request from the Executive based on a recent request from our bank about our capital campaign construction loan that required a quick response. For background, the purpose of the endowment fund is generally for non-annual new initiatives, or for large unanticipated emergency financial needs. We regret we were unable to give more notice. Through most of this year, our conversations with the bank led us to believe we would likely only have to make monthly payments through next year. But a few days ago the bank asked us to pay down the principal balance of the loan by about another $250,000 this summer, which is within their rights to ask.

The board, Rev. Aaron, and Finance Committee members discussed the history of the loan up to now, and issues around the endowment draw and its implications for the future. The draw will reduce the endowment balance from just under a million dollars to about $720,000. We're convinced that paying down the principal of our balance as the bank requests is our only practical course, and it leaves our current financial health intact. The board voted to approve the draw from the endowment, and also requested two plans from Rev. Aaron in his role as Executive. First, we requested a plan for endowment draws he may request to lessen the impact of the debt service over the next several years. And second, we requested a plan for bringing the endowment fund's balance back to full compliance with board policy, which generally requires the endowment fund balance to equal the fiscal year's operating budget. Please feel free to reach out to the staff, Board, or Finance Committee with any practical, policy, or finance questions.

Calling Housing Renters and Friends of Renters

VOICE wants to hear from you during the listening session after the single service on Sunday, June 12.
                • What challenges do you and your family face?
                • What changes would make your life better?
VOICE is asking these questions of diverse groups of people both within our church and throughout Northern Virginia this spring and summer to determine the most pressing issues. On October 16th, VOICE will call us to attend a 2000-person action to assemble before the political candidates in a show of civic power, to ask them whether they will lead with VOICE to help resolve these issues in the coming years.

VOICE has embarked upon this bold high-profile initiative to leverage civic power in this pivotal election year. Let your voice be heard.

Beth Rager Farewell Concert/Party in the Center Friday, June 3

After 40 years of living in Arlington and 25 years at UUCA, I've decided to move back to my home state of Michigan. It feels like the right decision, but I'm really going to miss the
wonderful community I found here at UUCA. A number of people suggested a farewell party, but I decided what I'd really like was a chance to perform my collection of mostly humerous songs that I've written over the past 10 years or so, along with a couple of songs I wish I had written. All are invited to come to the Center on Friday, June 3rd, from 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. for my farewell concert/party. I'll have a few snacks and beverages available but I encourage you to bring some wine, soft drinks, or snacks to share if you are so inclined. Reservations are not needed, but if you think you are going to come please contact Sarah Masters so that we can estimate how many tables/chairs to set up.
