Interfaith power Light For the second time this Sunday, April 24, as part of our recognition and celebration of Earth Day, the offering will go to two environmental organizations: Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment and Interfaith Power and Light.

Interfaith Power and Light is part of a national network building a religious response to climate change. It works with congregations of all faiths across Northern Virginia, DC, and Maryland to bring climate change to people's faith communities as a moral issue and to elevate and transform the environmental movement by speaking from a spiritually rooted place. IPL works with all the UU congregations in our area and with UUSJ, UUs for Social Justice. IPL's director, Joelle Novey will be speaking here on the evening of Wednesday, April 20. IPL is a small, grassroots organization that depends heavily on small donations, and so is grateful for any amount that you're able to give.

ACE logo ACE's mission is to protect and improve water, air, and open spaces in the Arlington community and nearby areas by promoting stewardship of our natural resources and connecting all citizens to practical solutions that achieve a sustainable lifestyle. ACE provides environmental education to Arlington's students and community and engages volunteers in protecting Arlington's natural resources. Their work is local, community-based and makes a difference by empowering individuals with resources, training, and opportunities to collaborate, and improves our air quality, mitigates the carbon footprint of Arlington families, reduces pollution into the Chesapeake Bay, improves wildlife habitat, beautifies Arlington's parks, and grows our environmental stewards of tomorrow.

General Assembly 2016
Krista Tippett photo
Krista Tippett
2016 WARE Lecturer
This year's theme for GA 2016 is Heart Land: Where Faiths Connect. The faith world is increasingly multifaith. People are crossing borders of religion and spiritual practice to create wholeness in their lives individually and collectively. The labels -- Christian, Jew, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, theist and non-theist -- no longer define who or what we love, or how spirit moves in our lives. General Assembly 2016 in Columbus Ohio will assemble leaders and communities of many faiths to worship together, learn from one another, and create a new vision of faith that no longer divides us, but connects us to an interdependent future that works for all. This year the 2016 Ware Lecturer is Krista Tippett, author, journalist and NPR radio host of On Being. Interested in attending or being a UUCA delegate? Contact anyone on the Nominating Committee: David Shelton, Gerda Keiswetter, Regina Kaufman, Melissa Rea, Pat Findikoglu

Peace, Propaganda and the Promised Land - Sunday, April 24, 2:30 p.m.
The next film in the Voices from the Holy Land 2016 series, to be screened April 24 at 2:30 PM in the Center, is Peace, Propaganda & the Promised Land. The film analyzes Israeli PR strategies, including selective language and "framing" that promote one-sided coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that is often adopted verbatim by U.S. media. Scholars, critics, peace activists, religious figures, and Middle East experts point out these structural distortions by comparison with more balanced international media coverage that does not hide the harsh realities of Israel's ongoing occupation and colonization of the West Bank. The film series runs through May 1. Walk begins at 1:30 p.m., 2723 King Street, Alexandria. Register or donate on Sunday after the services or click here. For more information on ALIVE!, contact Ann Marie Hay, [email protected]

Waddill watercolor Paintings by John M. Waddill (1927-2013)
May 1 - June 5, 2016

RECEPTION: Sunday, May 15, 3 p.m.
With entertainment by Goodwin House Bailey's Jefferson Street Band

John M. Waddill was born in Greenville, S.C. in 1927, trained at Parson's School of Design and became a designer for Fritz Fford (fine fabrics and wall coverings) in New York City in the late 40's early 50's. He relocated to Pinopolis, S.C. after the birth of his first child. He practiced a style contemporary with the time and maintained ties with prestigious N.Y. galleries and art world luminaries until the mid-1960s; after which he devoted his art-making to the surroundings of his beloved community of Pinopolis. Most of his later work features the glory of the natural world that so enchanted him. Many of these works exist in the collection of
Loren B. Mead, in Falls Church (Goodwin House), and in the home of Waddill's daughter, Sarah Armstrong, in Columbia, S.C., as well as in almost every domestic and commercial establishment in Pinopolis and Mounk's Corner, S.C.

Loren B. Mead, retired clergy and former Director of the Alban Institute in Washington, D.C., met Waddill in 1953 when they both arrived, with young families, in Pinopolis. Loren was taking his first parish after attending the Virginia Theological Seminary and Waddill was coming from New York where he was a practicing artist. A friendship was born that lasted more than 50 years in which Mead drew immense joy and inspiration from "Johnny's" artwork

Don't Miss out on Celebrating Two Decades of Love!
Cabaret - April 29 and 30, 7 p.m.
Helping youth and adults to learn about theatre arts, dramatic expression and community outreach has become a long-standing Chalice Theatre tradition. We are inspired by what Chalice Theatre has accomplished over the years and look forward to many educational and joyful arts performances to come.

You can help reflect on this joyful tradition of intergenerational musical theatre and help recognize the importance of this work at UUCA by attending the April 29 and 30 musical tribute to two decades of love. The Cabaret's program includes songs from the most-loved Broadway shows, recognition of founding leaders as well as the many participants. We hope you will join us to honor our founders and UUCA's service to the community for more than 20 years. All proceeds from the Cabaret will benefit the UUCA's general fund in support of the many programs the church generously serves.
