"What do you believe?"
Sermon by Guest Minister Rev. Emma Chattin

What is it that you believe?
A belief in absolutes . . .
This or that . . .
Human or Divine . . .
Male or female . . .
What keeps us from seeing both . . .
Co-existing right within us . . .
And have us forever missing the presence of both right before our eyes . . .
In grace of each other.

Watch the live-stream
of Sunday's services here.

PFLAG Metro DC logo
On Sunday, April 10, the GTP offering will go to the Metro DC Chapter of PFLAG. The national PFLAG (Parents, Families, Friends, and Allies United with LGBTQ People) was  founded in 1972 with the simple act of a mother publicly supporting her gay son. Today,  PFLAG is the nation's largest family and ally organization uniting people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) with families, friends, and other allies. PFLAG is committed to keeping families together and advancing equality and full societal affirmation of LGBTQ people through its mission of support, education, and advocacy.

The Metro DC Chapter of PFLAG sponsors 17 community groups across the DC area, including 11 in Northern Virginia. There are groups for adults, for youth, groups with a transgender focus, and one new group for Spanish-speakers.

The Arlington PFLAG Community Group, started by members of this church with the support and guidance of Rev. Linda, meets right here at UUCA on the second Tuesday of each month -- and celebrates its five-year anniversary on Sunday, April 10, 2016!

We dream of a day when PFLAG is no longer needed, but until then we will continue to create a safe space to share information, promote understanding, acceptance, support, and most of all love for LGBTQ people, their families and their allies.

Learn more at www.pflagdc.org, or stop by the Equality UUCA table in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday.
Message from the Administrator: Budget Meetings - April 12 and 23
Tamara Srader_ Chief Administrative Officer
Tamara Srader,
Chief Administrative Officer
Hello everyone! First of all, I want to thank each and every one of you for the warm welcome you have given me over the past three months. I can't believe that I have already been here that long, survived the blizzard, and now am witnessing my first spring in Northern Virginia. As most of you know, each year we host a series of open budget meetings to talk about where we are financially. I have scheduled two meetings this month to have a place to talk about the budget and hear your concerns.

The first meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 12, from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. The second meeting is scheduled for Saturday, April 23, 10 a.m. until noon. Both of these meetings will be held on campus of UUCA.

Please plan on attending one of these meetings if you have questions about our budget. I look forward to speaking with you all!

*Transgender: A term for people whose gender identity, expression or behavior is different from those typically associated with their assigned sex at birth. Transgender is a broad term and is good for non-transgender people to use. "Trans" is shorthand for "transgender." (Note: Transgender is correctly used as an adjective, not a noun, thus "transgender people" is appropriate but "transgenders" is often viewed as disrespectful.)

Board Linkage: Discovery Sessions for our RE Community

Dear UUCA Families and Friends:
The UUCA Board of Trustees is undertaking a project this spring to connect with the RE community more deeply. As the Board discussed our Ends policies at a Board retreat earlier this year, we realized we wanted to better understand how we grow together at church. Our goal is to have a stronger foundation of communication with people who participate in the RE program to better inform our policies that guide the ministers and staff.

In an effort to include as many people as possible, we have scheduled open sessions for parents, please see schedule below. Parents, please attend the session that works best for you and your family. Childcare is scheduled for weekday sessions, if you need childcare for a Saturday session, please contact LeeAnn or Ashley.

Please watch REConnect and other communications for information about these linkage discovery sessions. We hope you'll join us to talk about the difference UUCA RE has made in your life!

UUMAC -- A family summer vacation option
Are you looking for a summer vacation option that will be fun, rejuvenating, multi-generational, and affordable? The Unitarian Universalist Mid-Atlantic Community (UUMAC) '16 will be held July 10-16 near Allentown, Pa. It is many things -- a spiritual retreat, a family summer camp, an institute for learning and exploration, a week-long party and reunion of kindred souls. We play games and instruments, sing, listen, discuss, learn, worship, visit, laugh, work, eat, (and sometimes sleep), dance and nosh at Night Owls, and paint faces and toenails at the Carnival. UUMAC is intentionally a multi-generational community, and programming is a balance of activity according to age grouping and across age barriers. Children, teens and adults each have programming geared to their interests. As well, ages mingle for off-campus trips, and evening activities. This year's UUMAC will focus on Radical Hospitality and Radical Justice, A Journey In UU Identity in Stories and Song. Rev. Libby Smith, an adjunct staffer at the Joseph Priestly District, will be our Minister of the Week and Rev. Dr. Tracy Sprowls of the Plainfield UU church will be the Theme Speaker. For more information, please visit www.uumac.org or contact Pam Mann, themannclann@verizon.net

skeleton UUCA member Dr. Donald Leverenz will give a talk on the six million year evolution of humans starting with the common ancestor we share with our closest living relative, the chimpanzee, and going to the evolution of modern humans.  The presentation will cover the evolution of bipedalism, the development of tool-making, the evolution of the human brain, the spread of humans from Africa to every part of the world and a short history of the fossil finds that finally led to the acceptance of humans as part of the evolutionary tree of life. Don, after a  32-year career with the Army Corps of Engineers, retired in 2002. Since retirement, Don has taken classes at NOVA Community College and George Mason University in philosophy, biology, physics and engineering. He is currently a docent in the Hall of Human Origins at the Smithsonian's Museum of Natural History. All are invited. For further information, contact Jere Cummins, jeroldcummins@gmail.com

Day Alliance - Tuesday, April 12
Voices for Justice and Peace: In Israel and Palestine
Hensgen art Bud Hensgen, artist and a member of UUCA's Committee for Justice and Peace in Israel and Palestine, will share concerns and outreach efforts the committee is making to work towards stability and harmony in the Middle East. He will also speak of how the Israel/Palestine struggle has influenced his art. His work is currently on exhibit in the Center Gallery where the talk will take place. Bud has visited Israel and the West Bank twice in the past five years.  Each time he has returned with the realization that the American public sees very little about the life of the Palestinian people, their history of being driven from their homes and villages and their subjugation through the Israeli occupation. This exhibit employs the separation wall as a symbol of the barrier Israel has built to repress the Palestinians and to suppress its own awareness of the injustices it inflicts on Palestine's people. The Committee is also sponsoring a film series -- Voices from the Holy Land -- that runs on Sunday's through May 1. The Day Alliance gathering on Tuesday begins with coffee and conversation at 10:00 a.m., followed by a short business meeting. The presentation begins at 11:00 a.m. There is no charge to attend the talk. To stay for the catered lunch ($15) at noon, please reserve with Chris Gregory at gregory.christine@gmail.com.
Rituals for Our Lives, Cradle to Grave
UUCA is a religious community that ministers to people throughout their entire life, and even after they have died. We are here for all -- cradle to grave. Besides programming and education and worship for all ages, some of the "passage" moments for which this church offers sacred embrace include:
  • Dedication ceremonies, for the welcoming of new life into families and into our church community
  • Coming of Age and Bridging rituals for youth growing into adulthood
  • Marriage ceremonies
  • Other special ceremonies, for house blessing, anniversaries, retirements, and o ther life passages important to the individual and family
  • Memorial services, to mourn the loss and celebrate the life of those we love
  • Interment ceremonies, on our Memorial Garden walkway, where ashes may be interred, and names engraved in the pillars of the garden
If you would like to know more about any of these ceremonies, and would like to find out about our Memorial Garden and other ministries, please be in touch with Rev. Linda at rev.linda.peebles@uucava.org.

Voices from the Holy Land 2016

Film series attendees
Over 100 gathered last Sunday to view the first film in the Voices from the Holy Land series

More than 100 people gathered at UUCA last Sunday to view the first in a series of films that explore the complex and emotional issues preventing peace in Israel/Palestine over three generations. Al Helm [The Dream]: Martin Luther King in Palestine explored parallels between the U.S. civil rights movement and the liberation struggle of Palestinians living in the Occupied Territories. Former Minister Mark Penn of Ravensworth Baptist Church moderated a discussion after the screening.

The next program, this Sunday afternoon, April 10, features a "crash course" video by popular author John Green (The Fault in Our Stars) on the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and a documentary by Jewish-American Anna Baltzer that provides an eyewitness account of Palestinian life on the occupied West Bank.

The series runs through May 1 in the Center. All programs begin at 2:30 p.m. For more information, look for the Israel/Palestine table in the Fellowship Hall after Sunday services or contact Bud Hensgen, 703-524-7630, bhensgen1@verizon.net.
