The Offender Aid and Restoration
OAR logoThis week's Give-the-Plate offering goes to Offender Aid and Restoration (OAR), a community-based restorative justice organization. OAR  blends compassion and accountability to assist offenders in leading productive and responsible lives, to the benefit of all. The Offender Aid and Restoration movement offers offenders alternatives to sanctioned incarceration, such as community service and instructional programs. The ultimate goal is to break the costly cycle of recidivism and create a more just system. The local OAR serves the county of Arlington and the cities of Alexandria and Falls Church. OAR reaches out not only to those who have been incarcerated locally, but also those who were incarcerated elsewhere, and are now living in our region. Run by a volunteer Board and an Executive Director, OAR partners with a number of entities and relies upon contributions of time and money from community volunteers.

Last week's GTP offering went to Bridges to Independence and totaled $2,449. Thank you for your continued generosity to our Give-the-Plate offerings.

Wednesday, 2/25  "The Living Soul Newspaper"
7 - 9pm @ UUCA, Room TBD
We are daily bombarded with forces beyond our control.  Many people choose to set very clear boundaries around being affected by the energy of the world, but an essential commitment for any form of spiritual activism is to remain engaged.  "The Living Soul Newspaper" is a facilitated workshop that provides sacred circle space in which you can personally express your deepest soul questions, thoughts, and prayers.  We will use group energy and psychodramatic play to articulate what is in our hearts, share deeply, and end with a group healing transformation meditation. Facilitated by Kathleen Hanagan, LCSW.  Kathleen is a transformational psychotherapist and speaker who uses her experience and training in both business and shamanic practice to help guide others in their soul work. Free. To register, email Erica Shadowsong.  Childcare provided.

Peace Campers photo
In UUCA's unique summer camp program, Peace Camp, children discover that peace begins with them. Campers get the opportunity to explore cooperation and conflict resolution in a safe and supportive environment with other campers from UUCA and community partner organizations. Children learn skills to deal with their problems in a peaceful manner and are encouraged to create their own solutions.

You can register your campers (ages 5 to 9) for one or both weeks. Pre-care and after-care available. $250 per week/extended care available for additional fee (10% sibling discount). Scholarships available. Other opportunities include Jr Counselor-in-Training (ages 10-11), and Counselor-in-Training (ages 12-14). Staff positions are also available: Jr Counselors (16-18), Counselors (18+) and special guest presenters.

On Sunday, Peace Camp leaders will be in the lower lobby and Fellowship Hall after both services to answer questions and take registrations. For the camp brochure, click here. To register online, click here. Peace Camp is offered in partnership with Little Friends for Peace (LFFP).
Big Meadows Family and Friends Weekend - June 12-14
Even though it's chilly outside (okay - by the time you read this it's down right freezing - so let's think spring), it's time to reserve your campsite for this year's UUCA weekend in Shenandoah National Park.  This longstanding tradition gives us an opportunity to get out of the city and connect with nature and each other in a meaningful way. There are several activities planned and more in the works, including events for the whole group (happy hour Friday night, a picnic on Saturday) as well as plenty of open time with options for smaller groups and individuals, such as hikes, games, music in the lodge, or a stargazing stroll into Big Meadows. Click here for complete information and registration.

Faith in Action: Connecting - Growing - ServingFaith
What are you doing to help the planet by Earth Day (April 22)?
Picking up litter photo Rev Aaron has asked us all to pledge to do something to help the planet by Earth Day to help fight climate change. Many congregants already have made commitments of various kinds, from taking public transportation more frequently, to improving efficiency of home energy use, to planting a vegetable garden, to reducing meat consumption, to encouraging public officials to support solar energy. Here's what some of us are doing: Anne and Brent O'Neill and their two sons Kieran and Sean take a "trash grabber" and trash bag with them on walks with their dog Simba and pick up plastic and glass bottles, cans, and other materials for recycling or disposal. That helps to keep their neighborhood trash-free and beautiful, and also inspires their neighbors to help make a difference, too. What will your commitment be?
