MASSACHUSETTS MARINE EDUCATORS - NOVEMBER 2015
Supporting educators to inspire students of all ages to be stewards of the ocean by providing learning opportunities, meaningful experiences and relevant resources for marine education since 1969.

WHAT IS THE EVENT FORMAT?
Each symposium will feature three hands-on workshop sessions and a keynote presentation by a special guest.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
High school students and their teachers/chaperones

WHEN AND WHERE WILL THE EVENTS BE HELD?
  • Wednesday, March 9th at Northeastern University in Boston
  • Wednesday, March 16th at Salem State University in Salem
  • Both events will run from 8:30am to 1:00pm
WHAT IS THE COST?
$13 per student, teachers/chaperones are free. A light morning snack and lunch will be provided for all. Payments will be accepted by credit card or check (if by check, a Purchase Order is required in advance, and an invoice will be sent to you upon your registration).

TO REGISTER: 
Please check our website in early January for instructions on how to register your students. At that time, you will be asked to indicate the number of students you plan to bring, and also to submit your students' workshop preferences. Workshop descriptions and associated instructions will be available as soon as registration opens.

WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO KNOW?
Schools are responsible for providing their own transportation to/from the event.

CAN I SPONSOR THE EVENT?
Yes! If you or your organization is interested in supporting this event through sponsorship at the $100, $250, $500, $1,000 or higher level, please email v.perini@neu.edu. Sponsors will receive special mention in our program as well as at the events. 

WHO IS RUNNING THIS EVENT?
This event is sponsored by the Massachusetts Marine Educators, and the Northeastern University Marine Science Centerwith additional support from Salem State University and from many dedicated volunteer presenters. The High School Marine Science Symposium has been continuously offered by MME for over 30 years. Don't miss it!

CALL FOR PRESENTERS - HSMSS

We are actively seeking keen scientists, educators, students, and other practitioners of marine science to share their expertise with keen high school students. Graduate, undergraduate, and even well-prepared high school students are encouraged to participate, and presentations can be made by an individual or small group.  The format each day will be two back-to-back, hands-on workshop sessions lasting 50 minutes each.  Presenters can participate in one or both of the events, but are asked to at least commit to two sessions in a given day.  Persons interested in presenting at this event should fill out this online form by December 18th.
MARINE ART CONTEST

In conjunction with the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, MME is pleased to announce the 2016 Marine Art Contest with the theme "Amazing Creatures of Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary".  Open to students from K-12, submissions of original art are welcomed in the following categories:
  • Elementary School - Grades K-4
  • Middle School - Grades 5-8
  • High School - Grades 9-12
  • Scientific Illustration - All Grades
  • Computer Graphics & Photography - All Grades 
Modest cash prizes will be awarded to winners in each category, as well as a few special categories.  A photo gallery of images from past years can be viewed here.

FLOTSAM AND JETSAM
The autumn issue of the MME newsletter, F&J, is now online and available here. The theme for this edition is Ocean Acidification.

Submissions are being accepted for the winter edition under the theme "Marine Archaeology" through December 4th. If you would like to submit any related lesson plans or other educator resources, please email them the F&J editor at dimmick@esteacher.org.
