Ocean Literacy Summit - REGISTER NOW!
The New England Ocean Science Education Collaborative will be holding its biennial Ocean Literacy Summit from November 6-7, 2014 in Woods Hole. The theme this year is OL Principle #6: Humans and the Oceans are Inextricably Connected". For more information, click here!

Flotsam and Jetsam - Thar She Blows!
The Autumn issue of F&J is online! The theme of this edition is "Whaling in New Bedford", a timely topic following this summer's spectacular voyage of the Charles W. Morgan. The new F&J features news & activities from the New Bedford Whaling Museum and other MME interests.

We're always looking for educators to share stories and lesson plans! Contact the F&J Editor to contribute.

Event co-sponsors include the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, New England Aquarium, Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies, and Whale and Dolphin Conservation. "From the Bow Seat" Contest Open

From the Bow Seat announces its contest for 2015, which invites high school students to compete for cash prizes by tackling the issue of "Our Oceans, Our Plastic", individually or collaboratively. The deadline is June 15, 2015. More information can be found here

NGSS Webinars for Elementary Educators

Elementary school teachers interested in how the Next Generation Science Standards will impact your teaching are invited to join one of several webinars focused on this topic.  For more information, click here.

Floating Forests Needs Your Help!
Citizen scientists are needed to help identify and monitor changes in giant kelp forests from around the world using satellite imagery. Featuring access to an incredible education portal, ZooTeach, the Floating Forest website has resources for educators to learn more and get their students involved. Dr. Jarrett Byrnes of UMass-Boston is one of the lead scientists on this project. Join this "Zooniverse" - a web-based citizen science project - and "sea" for yourself!  For more information, click here.

Unique opportunity for local benthic studies! Local artist and producer of ceramics that tell the earth's story, Joan Lederman, has some vouchered seafloor samples from around Massachusetts Bay that she'd like to share with interested educators. Fall Sea Perch Workshops
This autumn, join the Museum Institute for Teaching Science for professional development on how you can launch the Sea Perch program in your school. Dates are Sept 29/30 at MIT, and November 13/14 at the South Shore Natural Science Center. For more information, please click here.
