Flotsam and Jetsam - Got Activities?
The Spring issue of F&J is online! The theme of this edition is "Marine Paleontology", and this edition contains a number of articles and classroom activities related to geology and marine fossils.
We are always looking for educators to share their great stories and lesson plans! Please contact the F&J Editor if you are able to contribute.

 2014 From the Bow Seat Contest
From the Bow Seat announces its contest for 2014, which invites high school students to compete for cash prizes by tackling the issue of Plastic Pollution in the Ocean, individually or collaboratively, through ART, ADVOCACY or ESSAY options. The deadline is June 15, 2014, and more information can be found here.

Mission 31 is Underway!
Fifty years since his famous grandfather spent 30 days submerged in the Red Sea, Fabien Cousteau and colleagues departed on June 1 for a 31-day mission to Reef Base Aquarius to explore marine habitat off the Florida Keys. Researchers from Northeastern and MIT will be saturating for the last 2 weeks of the mission.

MITS Summer PD Institutes
Join the Museum Institute for Teaching Science (MITS) this summer for a great professional development experience. The Sea Perch underwater robotics program runs mornings from July 7-18. A variety of other summer offerings are listed here.

GOMMEA Trip to Appledore Island
The Gulf of Maine Marine Educators Association is hosting a day-trip to the Shoals Marine Lab on Saturday, June 14th from 9:30am - 3:00pm. There will be tours of the grounds and facilities, as well as time at the water tables. For more information, and to register, click here.

Historic visit to Stellwagen Bank
After a six-year restoration, the whaling vessel "Charles W. Morgan" will be visiting the Stellwagen National Marine Sanctuary. One July 11, 12, and 13, you can tune into shows at 10am, 12pm, and 2pm LIVE from the Morgan and join the celebration with a number of historians, scientists, authors, and artists.

5th Annual Run for the Beach
Salem Sound Coastwatch will be holding it's 5th annual "Run for the Beach" 5K on Sunday, June 8th at 10am in celebration of World Oceans Day. Ocean-themed costumes are encouraged and may be rewarded! Click here for more info and to register.

World Oceans Day and PD Events at NEAq

Cape Cod Canal Centennial
It's been 100 years since the Cape Cod Canal was completed. Six years in the making, the 7-mile long canal was dreamt about by Miles Standish as early as 1626. Many events are planned to commemorate this engineering marvel - click here to learn more!

Coastal Ocean Science Academy (COSA)
Students are invited to take part in the COSA program at Northeastern University's Marine Science Center. A week-long middle school program runs from July 21-25, and a two-week long high school program runs from August 11-22. Click here for more info.
