People You Should Know


Henry
Elementary Student

Henry started at Giant Steps in 2011.  Some of his favorite activities are playing in the cocoon swing, jumping on the trampoline, and playing in the ball pit. With extra time and support, he's willing to try anything during occupational therapy.  Henry loves listening to Pandora on the iPad. He enjoys a sophisticated and diverse variety of music, especially The Beatles and other music from that era. Henry enjoys interacting with staff and has a wide array of engaging facial expressions.  He loves running with his friends to check the weather during morning group and watching the fish in the pond. Henry enjoys a variety of foods and his favorite is potato chips. He is learning to use PECS to better communicate with everyone.

Joy Cooper
Training Specialist

Joy Cooper, Autism Training Specialist, started her career at Giant Steps in 2003. She started as a program assistant, moved into a teaching position, then evolved into a coordinator, and is now a trainer for staff and community members through our Autism Training Center.  Joy has been a tremendous addition to the training team.  Her passion, enthusiasm, and eagerness to teach others is incredible.  Joy is an amazing person with a big heart. She is truly vested in every single student at Giant Steps. She always has a positive attitude and is dedicated to helping students be successful.  Joy always goes the extra mile to help students and colleagues.  Joy brings a wealth of experience and talent working with Giant Steps students and is infusing that experience and talent into the training program.

Jim Spangler
Board Member

Jim Spangler, Vice President - Corporate Affairs, Chief Communications Office for Navistar, directs the company's corporate communications and government relations operations.  Jim joined Navistar in June of 2011 as vice president of corporate communications and chief communications officer.  In November 2013, Navistar combined corporate communications and government relations into one function - corporate affairs - under Jim's leadership.

 

With more than 25 years' experience in the public and government affairs arena, Jim has held a variety of positions, including nearly 12 years with Tenneco, Inc., a global automotive supplier, where he served as vice president of global communications.  In this role, he was responsible for corporate positioning, communications strategy and policy, executive communications, employee communications, media relations, government relations and public relations.

 

Before joining Tenneco, Jim was director of global public relations and media relations for Arthur Andersen.  He spent nearly eight years at Amoco Corporation in roles of increasing responsibility within the company's Public and Government Affairs group.  Jim began his career as an award-winning reporter at City News Bureau of Chicago.

 

Jim holds a bachelor's degree in communications from the University of Illinois.  He is a member of the Arthur W. Page Society and a trustee for the Institute of Public Relations.

Kristyn Cropper

Staff Committee Chair, Junior Board

Kristyn is a junior high school classroom teacher at Giant Steps. She graduated from Benedictine University as a student- athlete with a Bachelors Degree in Special Education. She has been with Giant Steps for over two years now. Kristyn came to Giant Steps looking for new opportunities. Before finding Giant Steps, she worked with students who have autism in a public school. As she started looking into resources and opportunities to grow in the autism community, Kristyn discovered Giant Steps. She fell in love with the program and the services offered to students. As a teacher at Giant Steps, her goal is to give each student the resources and supports needed to become an active member in their community. Every day is a new experience; Kristyn is always learning something new about herself and the students. Giant Steps has given Kristyn a place to grow as a professional and person. She wakes up every morning excited to come to work and leaves every day with a smile on her face.

Giant Steps Swings for Autism 68 Holes Golf-A-Thon
  • Participant(s) play any number of times, on their own schedule, on their own courses, with whomever they want, wherever they want (Florida, Texas, California, Mexico - wherever you live or visit!) For example:  John Doe lives in Florida and plays 18 holes every Tuesday with a group of men.  John can designate one or more of those Tuesdays to be part of his 68 holes Golf-a-thon.  John decides to designate 4 (45 X 18 = 72) Tuesdays out of the 6 month time period, May 1, 2014 - November 1, 2014 to be his Golf-a-thon days.  He can complete his 68 hole commitment in one day, one month, couple of months, 6 months or spread it out over the entire year - it is that simple!
  • Participant(s) can register as an individual or as a team.   
  • Each individual must raise a minimum of $300 in pledges. Pledges can be $.10/hole, $.25/hole, $.68/hole, $1.00/hole, etc... or someone can just give a donation ($5, $10, $25, etc...)
  • Teams can consist of 4-12 individuals and must raise a minimum of $1200 - $3600.  For example:  John Doe collects $1.00 per hole from 5 people ($68 X 5 = $340) *Golfers must commit to a minimum of 68 holes but may pledge to play more, i.e. 100 holes. Name your team - be creative!!

  • Each participant will receive a pledge packet including a Giant Steps T-shirt and golf ball.
  • Participants MUST send us pictures of their foursomes playing golf - dress up, go crazy, HAVE FUN!!  Pictures must be "G" rated and will be posted on the Giant Steps website and Facebook page throughout the year.
  • REGISTRATION DEADLINE FOR THE INITIAL EVENT KICKOFF:  May 1, 2014
  • Participant(s)/Teams may register anytime between March 10, 2014 - October 30, 2014
  • RULES:  Have fun and everything is on your honor
Spread Autism Awareness by flocking a family member, friend, neighbor, co-worker, or business with Giant Steps traveling flock of flamingos. The flock has been spotted in Hinsdale, Burr Ridge, New Lenox, Woodridge, Deer Park, and Arlington Heights.

Send the flock out to say Happy Birthday, Congratulations, or to welcome home a new baby! It is a great surprise gift idea!

Junior Board for Young Professionals at Giant Steps
The Junior Board for Young Professionals of Giant Steps gives people early in their careers a unique opportunity to help children, young adults, and families living with autism. Their objective is to promote the mission of Giant Steps by engaging young professionals through social, volunteer and fundraising activities.
