YALSA Grant

Margaret Edwards Trust Literacies Programming Grant

"Now through Nov. 1, 2015, apply for this grant, which is funded by the Margaret Edwards Trust and will award up to five grants worth $5,000 each for libraries to use towards launching a new or expanding an existing successful program to help teens master text-based literacies. Successful applicants will address teen needs beyond traditional print reading comprehension and be inclusive of activities that help teens build skills to successfully navigate text-based literacies in both a print and an online world. Appropriate activities include but are not limited to helping teens with navigating nonlinear text, repeatedly evaluating resources, sifting through extraneous materials, inferring meaning, and using a range of features to compose unified messages.

Potential applicants can visit YALSA's wiki to learn more about multiple literacies. Apply via this online form."

Maker Challenges

Thingiverse wants to know if your patrons are up to a summer STEAM challenge?

This summer the 3D design sharing website Thingiverse is offering five different challenges each representing one component of STEAM. For more information on each individual design challenge click here.

Here are a few pointers from Thingiverse about entering:

"-Design something! You can participate in this Challenge whether you're a 3D-modeling expert or an absolute beginner. In fact, we especially encourage entries from people that are beginners! See the 3D Design Tips below for information about how you can get started with a few free, easy 3D-design programs.

-Post your design to Thingiverse. You can modify your design anytime up until the August 15 deadline. See the Challenge Entry Tips for ideas on making your entry as effective as possible.

-Be a scientist! Tell us about the science behind your 3D model, and/or show us how you tested your design. Consider including test results, weights, or even a video of your boat in action."

For free 3D design software have your patrons take a look at the web based tool Tinkercad!

On August 13th "SLJTeen goes LIVE with our fourth SummerTeen virtual conference, the premier event to hear directly from authors about their current and forthcoming YA titles. New this year are librarian-led sessions dedicated entirely to teen services and programming, covering topics such as planning a 'Con' at your library and successfully managing teen volunteers."
