Authors Unlimited

It was a sunny yet cool day on Saturday, April 25th when we were lucky enough to have eight authors travel out to St. Joseph's College in Patchogue for Authors Unlimited. Here they shared their thoughts on the writing process, how they come up with their ideas (some hear voices), where they are going next, and what super power they would rather have! There was a major debate on the panel on whether flying or teleportation was a better! The day was fun and incredibly insightful.

We are so grateful to these authors, the teens who attended, and of course to our volunteers who made the day run as smoothly as it did!

Community Service Roundtable

All are welcome to join us on Tuesday, May 5th for the Community Service Roundtable in the SCLS Blue Room.

We will meet to discuss community service projects, programs, and ideas with each other. Feel free to share tragedies and triumphs.

Please send me an email at derek@suffolknet.org to confirm if you will be attending or have any questions.

YALSA Grant

Margaret Edwards Trust Literacies Programming Grant

"Now through Nov. 1, 2015, apply for this grant, which is funded by the Margaret Edwards Trust and will award up to five grants worth $5,000 each for libraries to use towards launching a new or expanding an existing successful program to help teens master text-based literacies. Successful applicants will address teen needs beyond traditional print reading comprehension and be inclusive of activities that help teens build skills to successfully navigate text-based literacies in both a print and an online world. Appropriate activities include but are not limited to helping teens with navigating nonlinear text, repeatedly evaluating resources, sifting through extraneous materials, inferring meaning, and using a range of features to compose unified messages.

Potential applicants can visit YALSA's wiki to learn more about multiple literacies. Apply via this online form."

National Library

Legislation Day

"National Library Legislative Day is May 5th. Several hundred library advocates will be traveling to Washington DC to talk with elected officials and policy makers about the importance of libraries, but you and your library's advocates can participate from your home towns! Check out YALSA's wiki for lots of great ideas and resources that make it easy for you to be a part of this important effort. If you don't speak up for the importance of libraries in teens' lives, no one else will, so we're counting on you!"

CSLP Updates

As per Karen Balsen:

"Recently it was discovered that the PDF Forms Handouts on the CD/DVD for each program had edit guidelines on each page.  Unfortunately this was not caught before the CD/DVD's were distributed to libraries.  Upstart has corrected the problem and CSLP has uploaded all PDF Forms Handouts for all 4 programs to the CSLP website.

Once a member logs into the website,  the forms can be found under Membership & Sponsorship > Member Libraries > Proprietary Downloads > 2015 Graphics and Reproducible Files.  Each program link directs you to an alphabetical list of all PDF forms from that manual.

CSLP is very sorry for the inconvenience."

Also as per Karen Balsen:

"My contact at the NYS Assembly pointed out to me a "problem" with one of the color clip CSLP art images for 2015.

The image in the children's artwork showing the platypus with his feet on the desk, includes the initials "PPS." I know, for CSLP purposes I believe it  stands for "Platypus Police Society." However, those initials also stand for a easily concealed firearm "PPS - Walther Arms"
