Both morning and afternoon session PowerPoint presentations will be available on the Gateway shortly.

It Starts with a Story

Two hundred public and school librarians from Suffolk and Nassau counties made their way to the 16th Suffolk Literature Conference: It Starts with a Story. The day began with a read aloud of Lois Ehlert's Rrralph performed by the author/illustrator herself and her editor of over 20 years Allyn Johnston. They then spoke about working together and how Lois doesn't use email! Hand written letters and parcels are shipped back and forth during the writing and editing process. The pair were a delight to start off the day.

After attendees enjoyed discussion groups they sat down to lunch and were entertained by the one and only Holly Black (pictured below). Black shared the stories of her life (a ghost that lived in her attic and Barbies that she would turn into vampires) that shaped her and her career. She showed photos of her creepy child hood home as well as herself as an angst filled teenager. She went on to speak about the Spiderwick Chronicles, her newest YA novel The Darkest Part of the Forest and everything in between. The day was full of wonderful stories!

Attached is  a promotional flyer that can be printed out for distribution and posted in libraries, schools, and community locations.

Teens are directed to submit entry forms to their local library by February 25, 2015.

National Novel Writing Month

NaNoWriMo is back!

Celebrate the month for writing that novel/picture book/book of essays your patrons(or maybe you!) have been putting off all year. Take the time to sit down and write. Perhaps you can block out some time for your community room to be used as NaNoWriMo headquarters where laptops or charging stations or even some beverages can be served to help your community put pen to paper! Take a look at the main website at www.nanowrimo.org or participate in their Young Writers Program by going to ywp.nanowrimo.org
