Advanced

Battle of the Books

On Friday March 28th teen teams from all over Suffolk came to Brentwood Library to battle it out for the championship title of Advanced Battle of the Books. The teens had to read and study Divergent, Ship Breaker and The Name of the Star for months to prepare for the epic goodness. The competition was fierce, but it all boiled down to the final round where Longwood cinched the title with their title knowledge and their precise correct answers for some of the toughest questions in the battle. They also had some delightful Peter Pan inspired costumes! Above they are pictured with the winner of the Most Spirited Award, Shelter Island Library.

Congratulations to Longwood's "Reading Trust and Pixie Dust" team members Katie Brownfiel, Sophia Fellenz, Rebecca Gennes, Michelle Joseph, Victoria Kolasinski, Jimmy Nelson, Phil Rossillo, Devon Sandoval, Orena Wong and their coaches as well as everyone else who competed is this exciting and fun event!

I have to say that this was my first Battle experience ever and I am feeling inspired by these teens who put so much hard work and dedication into the event! Now, let us go forth to conquer this summer's Battle of the Books on August 9th & 11th!

Middle Country Makers

Stamp making, spool racers, electrified fruits & veggies were just a few of the projects kids and teens could get their hands on at Middle Country Public Library's Maker Fair that took place on Saturday March 29th. Above Olivia, 9-years-old, and Caroline, 6-years-old, showed off their engineering skills by creating marshmallow and toothpick structures. Also, take notice of their LED bracelet bling that they created at the Fair! Everyone at the library was involved in this fantastic event including the teens who led most of the projects! Patrons also had the chance to drive Arduino bots made from coffee cans by shining a flashlight on some perfectly placed sensors. Congratulations and keep on Makin'!

Inspiring Speakers

ALA President Barbara Stripling and Urban Librarians Unite co-founder Christian Zabriskie gave very inspiring speeches at St. John's University Bourne Mansion on March 15th. They empowered us to be the change in the lives of those that use our libraries. They spoke of the ways they have fearlessly evolved the services they offer their communities. They pointed out that if there is a problem we need to be active in being part of the solution. Here is a quote from each:

"We continue to learn. We continue to change. We are activists. We have to start with ourselves. We have to create a place where our communities can flourish."

-Barbara Stripling

"If I think that something needs to be different then I have to be part of the solution. It is the willingness to stand up and go alright this is important.

[...] I don't like to stand around protesting. I want to do something."

-Christian Zabriskie

Celebrate:

World Book Night is a celebration of literacy by publishers, bookstores, libraries and individuals who love books and reading. To learn more about how to spread the love of reading from person to person go to their website here.
Black Out Poetry

Celebrate National Poetry Month with a little bit of creativity while recycling! Known as Black Out Poetry or Newspaper Blackout this type of poetry has the poet use the already printed word to his/her advantage. Take a page from a book, newspaper, journal, etc. and a black sharpie marker and look for the meaning in between the prose already found on the page. Leave the words that speak to you as an artist and black the rest out! Here at SCLS we have a plethora of old galleys that are up for grabs. Email me at derek@suffolknet.org if you would like some! Go here to find out about the artist who originated this form of poetry and here for examples!

The Prize Place

You could win Undead and Unfed by Kirsty McKay by telling us about your favorite zombie read or movie on our Facebook page! These books have zombies, snow, Scottish countryside, government conspiracy and bone munching! Who could ask for more?

Congratulations to Tracey Moloney who won last month's

Divergent giveaway!
