Books to Films:

Infiltrated!

There is someone taking over our books when they are being brought to life in theaters - Shailene Woodley. This month a hit dystopian trilogy will be coming to the silver screen with its first installment: Divergent! And guess who's the lead? She's taking over! The 22-year-old actress will be playing the lead in the movie, Tris - a teenage girl who finds out she doesn't belong to any single one of the 5 factions, or groups, that her post-war society has now been separated into. In an interview with the UK edition of Glamour (click here for whole interview) she says that out of all the characters she has played Tris is the one she can relate to most.

Later in the year Woodley will be playing Hazel in John Green's hugely popular YA novel The Fault in Our Stars. Looking back Woodley has also played characters from books such as Alexandra in The Descendants, Aimee in The Spectacular Now and even Felicity in An American Girl Adventure. When asked what she thought people could learn from books like Divergent she replied, "That teenagers are way smarter than people think." Love that, although YA librarians have known that all along right? Divergent will be in theaters March 21st.

Social Networking Skills

Are you doing some amazing things with your library's social networking? Be sure to tell Kimberly Zettwoch at The Hampton Library in Bridgehampton or Joanne Albano at Commack Public Library all about it. The pair, along with Jamie Papandrea (Brookhaven) and Kristie Revicki (Suffern Free Library), will be presenting at this year's YSS Spring Conference. Their program "Like, Post and Pin: Successful Strategies for Social Media Use in Youth Librarianship" will showcase ways of using social media to promote and help grow your library's programming, collection development and reader's advisory.  They said they would love to share the spectacular things Suffolk librarians have been doing with their social networking with other librarians! For more information about the YSS Conference and their program taking place on April 4th click here.

Summer Reading

Bookmarks & Booklists

"The New York State Library is pleased to announce that the 2014 Explore New York reading lists and bookmarks for children and teens are now available here

The reading lists are designed to help libraries promote New York State related summer recreational reading and are available for download and printing.

The recreational reading lists are librarian selected lists that celebrate the history, culture, and diversity of New York State. The lists have been designed by the New York State Library in partnership with the New York State Library Association Youth Services Section and Section of School Librarians."

YA in Colombia

In February I was lucky enough to get to travel to South America for the first time. While in the city of Cali, Colombia I couldn't help but scope out "libreras" (book stores) wherever I was! Whether I was in a mall, a large super market or the airport I kept my eyes peeled for young adult novels. I am happy to report that not only were there YA books, but whole sections dedicated to teens just like there are here! As seen in the picture the popular series and books that we love are sold there as well. These paperback copies were usually priced between 21,000 to 41,0000 Colombian pesos (approximately 10.50 - 20.50 USD). Along with those shown above I saw saw Spanish editions of Allie Condie's Matched or Juntos and Diary of a Wimpy Kid or Diario de Greg. Let's all take a moment to note that that's pronounced Eleanor y Park!

The Prize Place

You could win this Divergent Movie-Tie-In edition by telling us your favorite dystopian read on the SCLSYS Teen Services Facebook page. See, we told you Shaleine Woodley was taking over!

Congratulations to Lori Ludlow who won last month's

Blessed giveaway!

Giving Face

While visiting Teen Blvd. at the Westhampton Free Library I was lucky enough to check out their Book Selfie display and star in a photo myself! Thanks to Amelia for snapping this pic and sending it along. Take a look at their blog for a few more of these facial matchups!

March Reads

Here are some new YA titles that are coming out this month!

Panic by Lauren Oliver

According to Goodreads, "Panic began as so many things do in Carp, a dead-end town of 12,000 people in the middle of nowhere: because it was summer, and there was nothing else to do. Heather never thought she would compete in Panic, a legendary game played by graduating seniors, where the stakes are high and the payoff is even higher. She'd never thought of herself as fearless, the kind of person who would fight to stand out. But when she finds something, and someone, to fight for, she will discover that she is braver than she ever thought." I enjoyed Before I Fall by Oliver and am thinking this will be another great standalone of hers.

Nil by Lynne Matson

According to Goodreads, "On the mysterious island of Nil, the rules are set. You have one year. Exactly 365 days--to escape, or you die.
Seventeen-year-old Charley doesn't know the rules. She doesn't even know where she is." This book reminds me of a different take on
Lord of the Flies. Basically teens stuck on an island with death and upheaval. I guess it also reminds me of Ten by Gretchen McNeil and Beauty Queens by Libba Bray (at their most basic forms of course)!

Both titles will be released on March 4th.
