Mental Health Awareness Walk
by: Jessica Boles

In recognition of May being Mental Health Awareness Month, individuals in the Charlotte County community will be raising awareness of mental health and erasing the stigma of psychiatric illnesses and mental health effort as they walk in Healthy Minds.Healthy Community Mental Health Awareness Walk presented by Criminal Justice Behavioral Health Advisory Council (CJBHAC) on Saturday, May 11th. Charlotte County is calling on the community to help the 1 in 4 American adults who live with a diagnosable, treatable mental health condition and understand how important mental health is to overall health.

This year we are having a bridge walk from Punta Gorda to Port Charlotte and back beginning at 7:30 am for those that want to a little extra exercise.  The ceremony will begin at 9 am at Gilchrist Park in Punta Gorda and activities will include a scenic walk in beautiful Punta Gorda, vendors and information tables.  Parking is available in the Public Parking lot located on the corner of Harvey Street and Retta Esplanade.

"We want people to know that while mental health and substance use conditions are common, they are extremely treatable and individuals go on to recover and lead full and productive lives," said Jessica Boles, Director of Marketing, Charlotte Behavioral Health Care.

Too many people who are living with a mental health condition

never seek or receive help due to stigma, lack of information, cost, or lack of health care insurance coverage-as high as 50 percent. "We want to change equation and help our families, friends and co-workers who may be reluctant to ask for help or don't know where to find it."
Our goal is to optimize behavioral health, improve quality of life and build an overall feeling of wellness for all children, adolescents and families in Charlotte County.

We are inviting everyone in the Charlotte County community to join us on Saturday, May 11th, 2013 by walking to raise awareness and help reduce the stigma of mental health. The first 100 walkers will receive a free Healthy Minds.Healthy Community T-shirt. The walk will also include free water, coffee from Starbucks, snacks, resources from local healthcare organizations and speakers from the community.  If you would like to represent your organization by having a FREE table at our walk, please contact us immediately!

Sponsored by Charlotte Behavioral Health Care as well as CJBHAC, which includes: Charlotte Behavioral Health Care, *211, Charlotte County Homeless Coalition, Florida Health Partners/V.O., NAMI, Coastal Behavioral Health Care (FACT) and the Administrative Office of the Courts of Charlotte County.

Drug Court Adopt A Road
by: Jessica Boles

Drug Court Celebrates "National Drug Court Month" With Adopt-A-Road and Keep Charlotte Beautiful

In celebration of "National Drug Court Month," the Charlotte County Drug Court is taking community involvement to a whole new level by Adopting a Road through Keep Charlotte Beautiful. The group will clean up the adopted road, Easy Street from Olean Blvd to Gibralter Drive 4 times a year starting in May.

"National Drug Court Month" is coordinated on a national level by the National Association of Drug Court Professionals (NADCP).  This year, Drug Courts throughout the nation are celebrating National Drug Court Month with the theme: "Drug Courts: A Proven Budget Solution. According to the NADCP, the country's 2,700 drug courts refer more people to treatment than any other system, and have put 136,000 seriously addicted people into treatment instead of jail.

Like the other 2,600 operational Drug Courts in the United States, the Charlotte County Drug Court is a judicially-supervised court docket that reduces correctional costs, protects community safety, and improves public welfare.  In Drug Courts, seriously drug-addicted individuals remain in treatment for long periods of time while under close supervision.  Drug Court participants must meet their obligation to themselves, their families, and society.  To ensure accountability, they are regularly and randomly tested for drug use, required to appear frequently in court for the judge to review their progress, rewarded for doing well and sanctioned for not living up to their obligations.  Research continues to show that Drug Courts work better than jail or prison, better than probation, and better than treatment alone.

Keep Charlotte Beautiful, KCB works with the community through cleanup and litter prevention like the Great American Clean Up, Coastal Cleanup, Illegal Dumping Task Force, Partners  for Clean Charlotte, Adopt-A-Road, Adopt-A Shore and the KCB Student Calendar Art Contest.

Recognizing Groups who are working to make Charlotte County a better place in which to live plays an important part in Keep Charlotte Beautiful programs. Keep Charlotte Beautiful's mission states KCB will improve the quality of life in Charlotte County through enhanced community awareness, education, and public/private partnerships.

Join us for the 10th Annual Summer Ball, Celebrating Generations of Hope, presented by Fred Lang Foundation to benefit Charlotte Behavioral Health Care. This event is an annual signature fundraiser that benefits children, adolescents, and families of Charlotte County who are in urgent need of crisis counseling, mental health counseling and/or substance abuse addiction treatment at CBHC.

This year's Summer Ball will be held July 27th at 6:00 pm at the Charlotte Harbor Event & Conference Center in Punta Gorda. Tickets are $100 each and the event is black tie formal.  Last year's Summer Ball raised $30,000, which went directly to provide urgent health care services for our community. CBHC currently provides services to over 10,000 individuals in Charlotte County, 3,000 of which are children, who cannot afford mental health and/or substance abuse counseling.

As communities across the nation continue to place more emphasis on mental health needs, we urge you to consider supporting our efforts right here at home. Charlotte Behavioral Health Care in partnership with Fred Lang Foundation is compassionate about implementing positive changes and assisting our neighbors to strengthen Charlotte County. Our goal is to optimize behavioral health, improve quality of life and build an overall feeling of wellness for all children, adolescents and families in Charlotte County. The Fred Lang Foundation's mission is to "help individuals find the hope for a brighter tomorrow" through effective mental health and substance abuse treatment. Without the financial assistance of the Fred Lang Foundation, some children, teens, adults and families might not be able to get the help they desperately need.

This year the theme of the Summer Ball is "Celebrating Generations of Hope" and will be a reflection of the outstanding achievements and successful accomplishments of Charlotte Behavioral Health Care throughout the years, since 1969. "We are excited that The Crashers will be providing the dancing entertainment and the event is open to the public; you do not need a formal invitation." comments Jessica Boles, Event Chair for the 10th Annual Summer Ball.

If you would like to become a sponsor or buy tickets to the 10th Annual Summer Ball planned for July 27, 2013 at the Charlotte Harbor Event & Conference Center in Punta Gorda, please contact Jessica Boles, Director of Marketing at Charlotte Behavioral Health Care at 941-347-6407, or visit www.cbhcfl.org

idashboard
by: Derek Rogers

Last month the governing board approved the purchase of the iDashboard software.   The iDashboard is a tool used to provide real time insight and access into both financial and clinical data.  What does that mean?  We are able to use the iDashboard system to integrate financial and clinical data in order to provide daily information on budgets, key performance indicators (KPI's), and other critical data.  Clinical and financial staff will be able to personalize a dashboard that will provide visual indicators of individual and overall (CBHC) performance.  With a click of a button their computer desktop may display daily, weekly, and monthly productivity goals.  The iDashboard also has an alert feature, which prompts clinical and financial staff of their performance tracking and if action is required to meet specified goals.   Currently, we are more reactive to our performance, and to financial tracking.   Implementing the iDashboard will give us the information to forecast and make proactive changes to keep financial and clinical targets in line.  For more information on the iDashboard software, you may visit www.idashboards.com

Remember to document all internal conversations and consultations surrounding client's treatment to ensure good continuity of care. This helps to create a smooth time line of the client's treatment and all of the services and good work that you do.

Safety Tip

Remember to lock doors behind you when exiting any locations, shut any windows that may have been opened during the day and to turn off coffee pots when not in use and at the end of the day.  This helps us to prevent theft, fires, and keeps us in compliance with fire codes.

Employee News, Kudos, & Congratulations

-We have somany audits that it's sometimes difficult to keep up! I wanted to acknowledge two recent audits:

Child Substance Abuse DCF audit at Northside:  Congrats to the CSA team for a 100% audit of services at Northside last week.  Rebecca was particularly impressed with the charts and with the fact that we provide in-home substance abuse services.

Central Florida Behavioral Health Annual Monitoring:  This audit encompassed just about every program across the agency and fiscal/administrative/HR and most areas received 100%.  They gave special thanks to Chris Gentry and Jennifer Reed for all of their time spent preparing and help.

It's so nice to hear auditors who audit all of our peers say "you guys are good."  Thanks for the great work that each of you is doing with our clients and in your overall work to contribute to our positive reputation and audit success!!!

*Vickie

-Our OP Prescribers are 100% concurrent and all documented within 24 hours!  This is three notes per hour!!!!! And congrats to Dr Oliva who is now documenting concurrent!  You guys are great models for the rest of us.  Thanks so much for your great work, and your efficiency.

*Vickie

-Congratulations to Khalilah Williams on completing her PsyD

-Good job to Tia for recognizing that a screening call was in need of a quick appointment.  She completed the screening, got them into the office the same day and during the assessment it was discovered that the client was suicidal and was admitted to the CSU.

-Congratulations to Lashell Shine on the birth of her grand daughter on Easter morning.

-Linda Collins was recently awarded the President's Volunteer Service Award for the 170 volunteer hours she has given to Hospice in the past year, both for honoring veterans in pinning ceremonies for their service to our country and also for her time spent "clowning" in nursing homes.

Employee Suggestions

April 2013

Suggestion:  I've noticed when in various buildings, there are offices/employees that are very liberal with the scents, (e.g.); perfumes, air fresheners, oil burners, plug-ins, etc.  While I understand it is nice to enjoy these, some of us have serious allergies & these scents can cause sneezing, red eyes, difficulty breathing & even headaches.  Is there a policy regarding scents & if not, could this be addressed?

Response:We all enjoy a few comforts during the work day & that often includes good smells in our offices & on our person.  However, we do ask that you be mindful of "heavy" and/or "pungent" aromas, as they can be potential health hazards & overwhelming to staff.  We want everyone to enjoy their work space & their services with CBHC, so please be considerate.  (Note) Burning candles are a fire hazard & go against fire safety codes & our "open fire policy #SAF-100-008."

We always appreciate your suggestions & your honesty!

Effort seeks to protect babies from drug exposure

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida officials have launched an educational website and helpline to raise awareness about babies being born exposed to prescription drugs.

BornDrugFreeFL.com and the helpline at 1-877-233-5656 are meant to educate expectant mothers about the importance of discussing prescription drug use with their doctors and to offer assistance. Billboards will go up across the state to promote the website and helpline. The website and helpline were announced Friday by Attorney General Pam Bondi, Department of Children and Families Secretary David Wilkins and Surgeon General Dr. John Armstrong. Newborns exposed to prescription drugs while in the womb suffer from Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. Symptoms include fever, seizures, blotchy skin, respiratory problems and sensitivity to sounds and light. Officials say about seven out of every 1,000 Florida babies born in 2011 were diagnosed with NAS.

Administrative Professionals Day

For Administrative Professionals Day a breakfast was organized where the front desk staff were given Shining Star Services awards and swag bags full of goodies.  As the supervisor for the front desk I was proud to present each person with a personal descriptive certificate and a star pin in recognition of their hard work. This is snippet from the certificates:  Together as dedicated professionals we have built a team that achieves more than we could individually.  Together we make an impact on many people's lives, find a reason to laugh each day, give each other the support and solutions we need to be successful and achieve our goals.  Each one of you is the shining star that together makes our team strong and I am proud to work with and lead you.
